Daniel P. Wright


Daniel P. Wright, 61, of Ogden, IL passed away at 2:10 P.M. Tuesday, March 19 th , 2024, in Vero Beach, FL.

A celebration of life will be held from 3:00 P.M. to 7:00 P.M. on Friday March 29 th at the Royal Community Building, 103 Park St. Royal, IL 61871.


Dan was born on December 1 st , 1962, in Champaign, IL to Martin and Vesta (Warren) Wright.


They both preceded him in death. His father-in-law David Fitch of Ogden, IL also preceded him in death.
Dan is survived by his wife Anita (Fitch) Wright; sons, Marty Wright (Corey) of Champaign, IL
and Mitchell Wright of Ogden, IL.; stepsons, Jason Johnson (Britney) of Sidney, IL and Tyler
Johnson (Kelly) of Royal, IL; grandchildren Brady Johnson, Evynn Johnson, and Ivy Johnson of
Sidney, IL and Kendyl Johnson and a new grandbaby coming in June of Royal, IL; and dog Zoe
Hingle McCringleberry.


Also surviving are two sisters Joan Roane and Mary Clark (Rod) both of St. Joseph, IL; three
brothers Paul Church (Lisa) of Rockmart, GA, Jim Wright, and David Wright both of Vero Beach,
FL; and numerous nieces and nephews.


Dan graduated from Champaign Central High School in 1980. He worked as a loan officer for
many years, most currently at Longview Bank in St. Joseph, IL.


Dan was a former President of the SJO Fan Club, board member of the PVO School District,
the Lion’s Club of Ogden, IL, and the St. Joseph Chamber of Commerce. Dan was also a
current member of the SJO FFA Alumni.


Dan loved a variety of music, road trips with his family, and spending time with his dog, Zoe, at
Homer Lake. He also enjoyed working on the landscaping at his home in Ogden. He loved
attending SJO sporting events and spending time with his grandkids. His most recent hobby
included harvesting monarch butterflies to survive in the wild.

account set up for the family to donate to the Champaign County Humane Society and the
Homer Lake Forest Preserve.

Allen Nelson Newman

 

MATTOON - Allan Nelson Newman, 85, of Mattoon passed away at 10:07 a.m. Tuesday (March 26, 2024) at home.

Visitation for family and friends will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Monday, April 1, at Schilling Funeral Home, 1301 Charleston Ave., Mattoon. Private funeral services honoring his life will take place Tuesday. Burial with military rites will follow at Dodge Grove Cemetery.         

Allan was born on Feb. 22, 1939, in Effingham, the son of Howard Nelson and Blanche Eleanor (Allan) Newman. He married his high school sweetheart, Karen Liane Bradley, on Feb. 6, 1960.

Survivors include his loving wife of 64 years, Karen Newman of Mattoon; daughters Kristin (Mike) Moncel, Michelle Hartbank (Terry Willenborg) and Stephanie Smith (Rob Lussenhop); and grandchildren, Skyler Hartbank, Payton (Jenny) Hartbank, Taylor Smith (Mike Novotny), Summerlyn Smith, Gibson Moncel and Brock Moncel.

Allan was preceded in death by his parents, Eleanor and Howard; daughter Lisa Newman; and mother-in-law, Eula Ihnen.

Allan attended school in Oakland and Paris, Ill. He then graduated from St. Joseph High School. He later attended and graduated from the University of Illinois with military commission as a 2nd lieutenant. Allan served honorably and proudly as a 1st Lieutenant in the U.S. Army. Allan worked at Young Radiator, and later retired from U of I in Springfield after many years of dedicated service. Allan was a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Most of all, Allan loved spending time with his friends and family. His greatest joy in life was attending the sporting events of his daughters and grandchildren.

He will be greatly missed by all those who knew and loved him.

Jerry D. Mullen

 Jerry D. Mullen, 86 of Sidney, passed away at 11:29AM, Monday, March 11, 2024 at home.

There will be no services.

Mr. Mullen was born July 20, 1937 in Sidney, a son to Pleasant Alfred and Willetta Franklin Mullen.  He married Jane Diane Stayton on March 29, 1959, she preceded in death on January 19, 2011.

Surviving are three daughters; Kelly (Jeff) Innes of Savoy, Jill (Michael) Daskalakis of Gaithersburg, MD, and Joni (Steven) Hansen of Chanhassen, MN, 10 grandchildren; Ashley, Amy, Austin, Cody, Lane, Andrew, Nicholas, Nicole, Brock, and Tyson, and two great-grandchildren; Brady and Helena.

He was preceded in death by his parents, and a sister.

He was a life-long farmer in the Sidney area.  He enjoyed sports and his happy hours.

David E. Marsh

 


March 10, 2024 David (Dave) E. Marsh passed peacefully from this Earth with his family by his side; including his wife of 71 years. 

Dave was born in St. Joseph Illinois on August 1, 1931 to Howard W. & Orena (Skinner) Marsh. He grew up in St. Joseph and graduated from St. Joseph High School in 1950. He married the love of his life, Doris (Miller) Marsh on June 16, 1952. Two weeks later he was shipped off with the Army to serve in the Korean War. Once he returned he started farming and also became a rural letter carrier. He retired from the postal service after 23 years but he continued farming for the rest of his life. 

 Dave was active in the local community and belonged to the St. Joseph American Legion, and served on the Drainage District board as well as the Patterson Cemetery board. 

Dave was proceeded in death by his parents, his brother, Calvin Marsh and one sister, Virginia (Marsh) Vinson. 

Survivors include 1 sister, Dorthy (Marsh) Vinson, his wife of 71 years (Doris), 2 sons, Howard Marsh and Bradley (Linda) Marsh, 4 grandchildren, 9 great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews. 

Services will be private graveside with family. 

Dave will be so greatly missed and his legacy will continue on as we farm the fields each year.

James E. Martin

 James E. Martin, 73, of Sidney passed away at 7:40 AM, Monday, March 11, 2024 at Carle Foundation Hospital, Urbana.

Celebration of Life will be 3:00 PM Saturday March 16, 2024 at Freese Funeral Home, Sidney.  There will be a visitation from 2:00 to 3:00 PM Saturday at the funeral home.  Burial will be at Mt. Hope Cemetery, Sidney with military rites accorded.

Mr. Martin was born December 16, 1950 in Champaign.  A son to Floyd Edwin “Eddie” and Shirley Shewhart Martin.  Surviving are two sisters; Kathy Pierce of Homer and Carol (David) Wiley of Peru, IN.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

He served in the United States Army, based in Germany during the Vietnam Era.  He loved motorcycles, riding all over Europe and the United States.  He also had a love for animals, especially cats.  He was a diesel mechanic, most recently working at Chris’s Service Company in Philo.  He volunteered at Champaign County Humane Society, Urbana.  He was also a member of Sidney American Legion Post 433.

Memorials may be made to Champaign County Humane Society.

Lavonne Ethyl Berry

 ST. JOSEPH – Lavonne Ethyl Berry, nee Grimes, of St. Joseph died Saturday, Nov. 15, 2008, of complications from old age.

Mrs. Berry, 89, was born in San Bernardino, Calif., on July 28, 1919. She was the widow of Henry T. Berry, formerly the Superintendent of St. Joseph High School, who preceded her in October of 2000.

Mrs. Berry was especially proud of her service as a "Rosie the Riveter," helping to manufacture the P-38 Lightning fighter planes during World War II.

Mrs. Berry is survived by her three children, Henry T. Berry, Jr., age 62, of New York City, Charles V. Berry of St. Joseph, and Barbara A. Berry, 54, of St. Joseph; as well as three grandchildren, Jennifer, Charles and Calvin; and a great-granddaughter, Maggie.

The funeral will be private and Mrs. Berry will be buried with her husband at the Danville National Cemetery, Danville. Freese Funeral Home, 302 E. Grand Ave., St. Joseph, is in charge of arrangements.

Mary Margaret Phillips

 Mary Margaret Phillips Allen, 91, a longtime resident of Urbana, died at 2:20 a.m. Thursday, May 7, 2009, at Illini Heritage Rehabilitation and Health Care in Champaign.

Arrangements are being handled by Renner-Wikoff Chapel, 1900 S. Philo Road, U.

Ms. Allen was born at home near Deer Station on April 25, 1918, the third child of James Richard and Mary (Corray) Phillips. She is survived by three daughters, Nancy Jo Allen of Urbana, Kathleen Stratton of Santa Cruz, Calif., and Christine Allen, also of Urbana; one son, James Phillip Allen of Santa Cruz, Calif.; five grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents, three sisters and one brother.

Ms. Allen was a 1936 graduate of St. Joseph High School and attended Barry Castle Business School in Champaign. She worked as a bookkeeper in the livestock brokerage of her father, J.R. Phillips, and for Champaign National Bank prior to her marriage to Joseph H. Allen on April 9, 1942, in San Antonio. She farmed with him for many years in Ford and Champaign counties. Their union ended in divorce in 1969.

Ms. Allen worked for the University of Illinois in accounting, retiring in 1980 after 17 years of service. She was an enthusiastic collector of antiques who also enjoyed gardening, reading, films, politics, and studying American Indian history. She was especially interested in the Lakota people of the North American plains.

In accordance with her wishes, Ms. Allen is to be cremated and there will be no services. Interment in the family plot at Mount Olive Cemetery will take place at a later date. Memorials may be made to Anpetu Luta Otipi, P.O.
