Richard "Dick" Burwell


 Richard “Dick” Burwell, 76 of St Joseph, IL went to be with his Lord and Savior on Friday December 26, 2025, at 7:55pm at Carle Foundation Hospital, Urbana, IL. Dick was born March  24, 1949 in Urbana, IL, first son of William Ardie and Helen Marie (Perkins) Burwell. They preceded him in death.


Dick married the love of his life, Paula Hartrick on June 27, 1971, at University Place Christian Church, Champaign, IL. They shared 54+ years of marriage.


Dick graduated from Urbana High School and attended Parkland College. He worked  in Computer Science at the University of Illinois, retiring December 31, 2001. He was a Mason, being a member of the St Joseph Masonic Lodge 970. He was a Past Master and, like his father before him, was a 32nd Degree Mason of the Scottish Rite Valley of Danville.


He was an avid Sci-Fi fan and collector and enjoyed time traveling with Paula and had some very memorable trips with his parents and his brother and wife Pam, as well as a number of close friends over the years.


Dick is survived by his wife Paula (Hartrick) Burwell, brother Allen (Pam) Burwell of South Daytona, FL, sister Teresa (Tom) Twigg of Thomasboro, IL and several nephews, nieces and great nieces, along with many extended family and friends.


Funeral services will be held at 1:30 pm Friday January 2, 2026, at Renner-Wikoff Chapel & Crematory, 1900 Philo Road, Urbana, IL, with Visitation starting at 12:30 pm, Masonic Rites will be at 1:15 pm by the St Joseph Lodge 970. Reverend Jon Scott from River Valley Church of Christ will officiate and burial will follow at Mt Olive Cemetery in Mayview, IL.

Ken Nelson

 
Philo - Ken Nelson, 58, of Philo passed away at 1:23 a.m. Friday (Dec. 26, 2025) at Carle Foundation Hospital, Urbana.

Funeral services will be at 1 p.m. Friday, Jan. 2, at Freese Funeral Home, Sidney. Burial will be in Mt. Olive Cemetery, Mayview. There will be a celebration at the Philo Tavern following the burial.

Ken was born Nov. 28, 1967, in Urbana, a son to Junior and Jerre Eaton Nelson. Both survive in Champaign. He married Beth Craig on Dec. 2, 1995, in Champaign, and she survives.

Also surviving are his children, Brady Nelson of Philo, Blair Nelson of Philo, Brenna Nelson of Champaign and Brant Nelson of Philo.

He was preceded in death by his brother, Kevin Nelson.

He was a referee for the IHSA for many years in basketball, football and baseball. He even had the honor of refereeing in several state finals.

He was an Illini, Bears and Cubs fan.

He will be missed by his friends and colleagues.
