Stephen Glasgow

Fairmount - Stephen R. Glasgow, 52, of Fairmount passed away Saturday (Jan. 10, 2026) at Carle Foundation Hospital, Urbana.

Stephen was born on July 18, 1973, in Urbana, to Gene and Jeanne McCurdy Glasgow. He married Dawn Bidner on June 5, 2004, in Savoy. She preceded him in death in 2010.

He was also preceded in death by his sister, Carolyn Denise Patterson.

Stephen is survived by his children, Gwynna Glasgow and Drew Glasgow; and parents, Gene and Jeanne Glasgow.

Stephen graduated from Jamaica High School in 1991 and received a fine arts degree from Parkland College and a fine arts degree from the University of Illinois.

Growing up, he enjoyed going to Turkey Run to hike on the trails and loved to play on the computer and received most of his computer knowledge from his mother. This computer knowledge helped him begin his career as an independent commercial graphic designer, then he received a job at the UI as a graphic designer, and finally got a job at Carle Foundation Hospital as a lead designer.

He had a passion for design and art outside of work as well. He spent many hours working on his own projects and selling them at various local events and posting a lot of his work on his Facebook page for all to see. Stephen was involved in creating podcasts with friends from various parts of the country, attended Comic-Con for a few years, and loved to read an array of different genres of books, with some being science fiction, fantasy fiction, biographies and historical fiction. He also had a love of online video games, which is shared with his son and daughter, and was a member of the Broadlands Immanuel Lutheran Church.

Visitation will be from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Monday, Jan. 19, at the Broadlands Immanuel Lutheran Church, 390 County Road 2400 East, Broadlands, with a funeral service beginning at 2 p.m. Burial will follow in Fairfield Cemetery, north of Newman.

Memorial donations may be made to the Broadlands Immanuel Lutheran Church.

James Russell "Jim" Salrin

 Fairmount, Illinois – James Russell “Jim” Salrin, 94, of Fairmount, Illinois, passed away on Monday, August 25, 2025, at the Oaks Manor in Oakland, Illinois.

James was born November 15, 1930, in Sidell, Illinois, the son of Russell and Ethel Burgett Salrin. He married Annabelle Williams on March 18, 1951, in Fairmount, Illinois. She preceded him in death on September 21, 2023. Survivors include: one son: Doug Salrin of Fairmount, Illinois; one daughter: Judy (Frank) Lucas of Sidell, Illinois; two brothers: Richard Salrin of Oakwood, Illinois and Ed Salrin of Arkansas; three grandchildren: Heide (Rob) Knoebel, Haley (Clint) McQueen, and C.J. Lucas; and seven great grandchildren: Owen Knoebel, Eian Knoebel, Calvin Lucas, Penalope Lucas, Cooper McQueen, Adlee McQueen, and Anna McQueen. He was preceded in death by one sister: Josephine Salrin.

James served in the US Army was a former Fairmount, Illinois Postmaster and had worked for Hyster for 35 years. He was a member of New Hope Community Church. He was a 33rd degree Mason and was a member of the Catlin Masonic Lodge as well as Danville Consistory. Jim & Annabelle enjoyed square dancing and their euchre card group. He liked playing horseshoe pitching and trap shooting. In later years, Jim became quite accomplished at jig saw puzzles.

Funeral services at 11 am on Friday August 29, 2025, at New Hope Community Church in Fairmount, with Pastor Ron Weishaar officiating. Burial in Davis Cemetery west of Fairmount. Visitation is from 10 am till service time on Friday, August 29, 2025, at the church with Masonic rites at 10:55 am. Memorials may be made to New Hope Community Church or Catlin Masonic Lodge. Carolyn Jane "CJ" Sperry Sadler

Carolyn Jane "CJ" (Sperry) Sadler, 84, died July 7, 2025, at her Autumnwood Village home in Tipton, Ind.

Born June 8, 1941, in Danville, she was the daughter of Glenn R. Sperry (1916-1995) and Leah E. Sperry (1919-2023). She married John Wm. Sadler on June 11, 1961, in Danville. He preceded her in death along with a grandson, Thomas R. Kuhn.

She is survived by daughters, Marcella "Marcy" (Thomas) Kuhn of Noblesville, Ind., and Michelle "Mick" Sadler Williams of Vancouver, Wash; grandchildren, Kenzie, Bram, Tynan (Mattie) Williams and Madeline Ling Kuhn; her brother, Larry (Jamie) Sperry; and many other family members and friends.

Carolyn graduated from Oakwood High School and St. Elizabeth Hospital's Medical Secretary School in Danville. With an incredible work ethic and boundless energy, she was employed at several businesses in Danville until her marriage. Once living on the Sadler farm west of Fithian, she was soon busy raising daughters with John and in-laws, John R. and Zelma Sadler. The rather impatient Carolyn soon found she was better suited for work in town than waiting in line at the grain elevator during harvest. She joined James L. Myers at his Ogden insurance agency and then at the First National Bank of Ogden as his secretary. Active in the National Secretaries Association, she was

honored as the Illinois Secretary of the Year. Her integrity and strength of character cracked her generation's glass ceiling from administrative work to loan officer and vice president. She thrived on helping customers' start and grow businesses as well as leading the bank's compliance and trust departments.

While her daughters were pursuing their educations, Carolyn continued hers, graduating from the School of Banking at Southern Illinois University (Carbondale) and the Graduate School of Banking at the University of Wisconsin-Madison.

She left the bank to pursue new opportunities including the Office of the Comptroller of the Currency, University of Illinois Credit Union, Frey Finance and the Champaign County Circuit Clerk's office. After retirement, Carolyn and John moved to Leesburg, Fla., where they spent nearly a decade enjoying palm trees, sunshine and entertaining. She gained new friends, created beautiful quilts and learned to paddle on a senior dragon boat team. John and Carolyn were at their best entertaining friends and family on the farm, on the Sadler boat "Seabear", or in Florida. She loved decorating her homes, shopping for beautiful clothes, especially shoes, twirling her baton and driving fast cars. CJ kept the "pedal to the metal" either when driving or operating her sewing machines.

She was a member of the Ogden United Methodist Church, Ogden and the First Presbyterian Church, Leesburg, Fla., and Fithian Woman's Club.

A celebration of life will be held at a later date.

Janice Manzo

 Janice Manzo, age 78, passed away peacefully on Sunday, February 9, 2025, surrounded by her loving family. She was born on October 13, 1946, in Homer, Illinois to Lawrence and Kathryn (Davis) Rowand.

After graduating from high school, she attended Eastern Illinois University, where she earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in 1968.  Janice met her future husband Joseph “Joe” Manzo through a close mutual friend just as Joseph was preparing to return home to Cleveland Ohio. Five months later, they were married on May 21, 1977.

 They started their life together in Illinois and had their only son Jared in 1980. Janice was inspired by the nurses who cared for her during her maternity stay and decided to pursue a nursing career. In 1983 Janice graduated with a nursing degree from Lakeview Medical Center in Danville, Illinois.  Janice worked in various roles, including as a school nurse, a county nurse, and in private practice with a family practitioner who taught her the true meaning of patient care.

Joe’s career relocated the family to Wichita Falls, Texas and later San Antonio. In 2015, Janice and her husband moved to Tennessee to be closer to their son. There they became members of their church home, Hendersonville First Baptist Church. Janice volunteered with the Nashville Rescue Mission and the local library.

Janice traveled all over the world including tours of Turkey, Greece, and Isreal.  As much as she loved to be on the go, you could often find her sitting with a cup of tea, engrossed in a mystery novel.

 Janice is preceded in death by her parents Lawrence and Kathryn Rowand, and brothers James and Joseph Rowand. She is survived by her husband of 47 years, Joseph Manzo, son Jared, and his spouse Lauren, along with numerous friends and family.

Visitation will be held on Thursday, February 13, 2025, from 3-5 pm at Hendersonville Funeral Home. A funeral service will begin at 5 pm in the Chapel at the funeral home. Janice will be laid to rest in Homer, Illinois, at a graveside service on Monday, February 17, 2025, at 1 pm at the Davis Cemetery in Fairmount, Illinois.

Kenneth H. "Herb" Lacey

 
Homer, Illinois – Kenneth H. “Herb” Lacey II, 81, of Homer, Illinois, passed away at 10:45 am on Tuesday, June 27, 202, at his home.

He was born on September 17, 1941, in Urbana, Illinois, the son of Kenneth Herbert and Betty Sanford Lacey I. He married Marilyn Kay Rosnett on December 11, 1960, in Homer, Illinois. She survives. Also surviving: one son, Kenneth Jay Lacey of Homer; two daughters, Karen kay Lacey of Nashville, TN and Kristine Gay Lacey of Nashville, TN; one brother, James (Theresa) Lacey of Homer; and one sister, Bonnie (Jeff) Taylor of Homer.

Herb worked as a truck driver for Super Value and J.M. Jones. He served for a time on the Village of Homer town board. He was a longtime member of the New Hope Community Church in Fairmount and was active in the major renovation of the church building several years ago. He enjoyed woodworking and was knowledgeable in the mechanics of older cars and enjoyed working on them. He also enjoyed Indy car racing.

Jack L. Hepburn

 URBANA — Jack L. Hepburn, 90, of Urbana, passed away Tuesday, Nov. 29, 2022, due to complications from Alzheimer’s disease.

The co-owner of Illini Institutional Foods in Rantoul for over 40 years began his career working at a Grab-It Grocery store in Urbana in the 1950s.

He held numerous positions in local clubs, including president of AMBUCS and president of the Illini Quarterback Club, to name a few. A big University of Illinois fan, he held season tickets for Illini football and basketball for decades. Half his wardrobe seemed to be Illini orange.

Outgoing and always with a hello to everyone, Jack was respected by many for just being upfront and frank, with a cackle that made you laugh. His work ethic could never be questioned. He couldn’t sit still for long before jumping up to “do something.” His hobbies lasted a year or two before they bored him and he moved on to another. Fishing, golf, travel, ancestry, gardening — he would fully immerse himself, then move on to another challenge. Nothing was halfway done; he was all in at all times.

He married his wife, Norma Jean Franklin of Homer, on Dec. 22, 1953. Their 65 years of marriage was full of laughs and tears, as is everyone’s. They eventually had three boys who aged them quicker than they thought they would.

Jack was born on Dec. 22, 1931, in Fairmount, one of seven children of Cleland and Lois (Crawford) Hepburn.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Norma Jean (Franklin) Hepburn, in November 2019.

He is survived by a brother, Bill Hepburn of Ocala, Fla.; a sister, Sue Caldwell of Sebring, Fla.; three sons, Kirk of Chicago, Doug of Charleston, S.C. and Darin of Urbana; three grandkids, Nick, Alec and Lindsey, all of Charleston, S.C.; and a lot of great memories.

Daniel J. Albers

 
FAIRMOUNT - Daniel J. Albers, 38, of Fairmount passed away at 6:41 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 29, 2022.

Visitation will be held from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 5, 2022, at Freese Funeral Home, 302 E. Grand Ave., St. Joseph, with funeral services to follow at 1 p.m. Pastor Shawn Boylan will officiate. Burial will be in Stearns Cemetery, Fithian.

Daniel was born Aug. 26, 1984, in Urbana, the son of James and Barbara (Ashley) Albers. He married Rachel Douglas on Oct. 15, 2011, in Urbana. She survives.

He is also survived by two sons, Holden and Owen Albers; his mother, Barbara Albers of Fithian; a sister, Chandra (Chuck) Fryer of Marseilles; a brother, Kevin (Breana) Albers of Fithian; and two nephews, Emmor Albers and Charlie Fryer.

He was preceded in death by his father; his maternial grandparents, Jim and Betty Ashley; and his paternal grandmother, Hilda Albers.

Daniel worked at the University of Illinois since 2009 as a network engineer with Technology Services. He was also a member of the employee engagement committee. He always had a smile on his face and was respected by his coworkers.

Dan was a member of the Fairmount Village Board, the Fairmount Volunteer Fire Department and Trinity Lutheran Church in Urbana.

Daniel was always willing to help out and do for others. He also did what it took to make his family happy and support them to make the best memories.

He also enjoyed working on motors and motorcycles. He was a member of the Honda CB750 Motorcycle Group.
