Raymond T. Johnson

 

Thomasboro - Raymond T. Johnson, 87, of Thomasboro died at 6:45 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 14, 2026, at home.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, Jan. 19, at Peace Lutheran Church, 200 W. Arnold Ave., Thomasboro, with the Rev. Michael Stoerger officiating. Burial will follow in Beckman Cemetery. Visitation will be from 3 to 5 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 18, at the church. Baier Family Funeral Services, Flatville, is handling arrangements.

Raymond was born Dec. 16, 1938, in Urbana, the son of Theodore and Edna Janssen Johnson. He married Sherry K. Boggess on March 18, 1967, at Peace Lutheran Church, Thomasboro. She survives.

Along with his wife, Sherry, he is survived by two daughters, Lisa (Don) Johnston of The Villages, Fla., and Melissa (Peter) Hartman of Champaign; four grandchildren, Brandon (Carlie McCleary) Johnston, Allie Johnston, Jacob Hartman and Nathan Hartman.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

Raymond attended Allen School from 1944-1952 and graduated from Urbana High School in 1956. In 1975, he graduated from the Graduate School of Banking, University of Wisconsin. Raymond served in the U.S. Army 1962-1965.

In June of 1956, he started as a bookkeeper at Champaign County Bank. He went on to become a proof operator, internal accountant, auditor, cashier, chief operations officer and vice president. After leaving the bank in 1987, he became a full-time farmer with his father.

Raymond was a member of Peace Lutheran Church, Thomasboro; currently serving as church treasurer. He previously served as congregation chairman. In 1990, he was appointed trustee and treasurer of Beckman Cemetery.

He was an avid St. Louis Cardinal fan. Raymond loved spending time with his family.

Edwin Louis Rademaker

 OAKWOOD — Edwin Louis Rademaker, 91, of Oakwood passed away Saturday (Dec. 13, 2025), surrounded by his loving family, at the Palliative Care Facility at Veterans Affairs Illiana Health Care System in Danville.

He was born Sept. 9, 1934, in Sellers, to the late William and Anna (Albers) Rademaker. On Nov. 28, 1957, he married JoAnn Loschen; she survives. They enjoyed 68 years of marriage.

Along with JoAnn, he is survived by ason, Jeffrey (Carolyn) Rademaker of Marshville, N.C.; daughter, Sheila (Paul) Walter of Indianapolis; two grandchildren, Nicholas Rademaker and Kirstyn (Christopher) Glidewell; and one great-grandson, Ronin Glidewell, all of Marshville.

In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by his brothers, Melvin, Eldon and Ray Rademaker.

He graduated from Rantoul Township High School in 1952 and worked for the Railway Express Agency for two years. Edwin joined the Army, along with his friend John Sherman, in January 1954 and was discharged in January 1956. While in the Army, he served in Germany and was able to see his grandfather and other family members in Ostfriesland in Northwestern Germany.

He retired from the United Parcel Service in 1994 after 37 years. He was very proud of his work and would always offer safe driving tips to anyone who would listen.

Ed enjoyed polishing his classic cars and trucks and showing them at car shows. All of his friends knew him as “Eddie.” Another of his favorite activities was riding his beloved John Deere lawn mower and keeping a beautiful lawn. Ed and JoAnn enjoyed playing euchre over the years with family and friends.

Ed and JoAnn attend St. John’s Lutheran Church in Royal, where they served as ushers and altar guild for many years.

Funeral services will be at 11:30 a.m. Thursday, Dec. 18, at St. John Lutheran Church, 203 E. Church St., Royal, with the Rev. Emil Blobaum officiating. Burial will follow in Beckman Cemetery. Visitation will be on Thursday from 9 to 11:30 a.m. at the church. Baier Family Funeral Services, Flatville, is handling arrangements.

Cynthia "Leigha" Youck

Cynthia “Leigha” Youck was called home to the Lord on September 17, 2025 in Portsmouth, Ohio surrounded by her loving family.  Leigha could light up a room with her smile and warm a heart with her kind words or the hugs she loved to give.  Leigha was an expert shopper, and she delighted in using her skills for all holidays (especially Christmas), birthdays, special occasions or a whim.  She was sweet, spunky and fun.  Leigha enjoyed decorating, gardening, dancing and relaxing on the boat with family and friends.  She was a devout Christian and was proud to proclaim her faith to those around her.  She strengthened her faith as an active member of several congregations and in private prayer and meditation.  Leigha was a loving wife and a devoted mother, grandmother and great-grandmother and loved being with the extended family.

Leigha was born in Rantoul, Illinois on August 7, 1955 to Samuel and Barbara Bever.  She had three sisters Elizabeth (“Lynn”), Lori, Lisa and a brother Matthew.  Leigh was a 1973 graduate of Rantoul Township High School (Illinois) and attended Eastern Illinois University where she studied Early Childhood Development.  She used those childhood development skills at Cunningham Children’s Home and Heritage School District but was happiest when nannying for individual families.  

Leigha is survived by her loving husband Bill, daughters Rebecca Davis (Gene), Kelly Youck, Caitlin Calloway (Adam), grandchildren Paige Flesner (Brandon), Parker Flesner, Peyton Flesner, Chloe Calloway and Vivian Calloway and one great-grandchild Kayson.  She is also survived by her sister Lori Ehmen (Charlie) and brother Matthew Bever (Natasha).  

Leigha is predeceased by her father Samuel and mother Barbara along with her sisters Lynn and Lisa.

Funeral services at 10:30 A.M. Thursday September 25, 2025 at Freese Funeral Home 302 E. Grand Ave. St. Joseph. Pastor Scott Smith will officiate. Burial will be in Beckman Cemetery,Rantoul. Visitation will be held Wednesday September 24, 2025 from 5:00 P.M. to 7:00 P.M. at the funeral home.

Helen M. Feder

 RANTOUL - Helen M. Feder, 100, of Rantoul went to be with the Lord on Tuesday afternoon (March 18, 2025) at ClarkLindsay, Urbana.

She was born Dec. 15, 1924, in Compromise Township, a daughter of Robert August and Mary Caroline (Wagner) Feder.

Helen was preceded in death by her sister, Edna, and a cousin, Bernice, with whom she shared a sisterly bond, as she was raised by Helen's parents.

She is survived by a great-niece, Jackie Meyer; a great-nephew, Jeffery Schrank; and another great-niece, Julie Ann (Schrank) Dortch.

She was a member of the Peace Lutheran Church in Thomasboro, and she had a strong faith. She enjoyed traveling, playing cards and spending time with friends. She was the kindest of souls and lived a simple, frugal life.

Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at Peace Lutheran Church, Thomasboro. The Rev. Michael Stoerger will officiate. Burial will follow in Beckman Cemetery. Visitation will be for two hours prior to the service at Peace Lutheran.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Peace Lutheran Church or The Lutheran Church - Missouri Synod (LCMS) St. Louis.

Mary Lou Allen

 

Mary Lou Allen, 87, of Oakwood, Illinois, passed away Wednesday, September 4, 2024, at OSF Heart of Mary Medical Center in Urbana, Illinois.

She was born on March 8, 1937, in Danville, Illinois, daughter of Kleemon and Nancy (Swank) Holycross.

Mary Lou married the love of her life, Robert “Bob” Allen, on October 18, 1959, in Oakwood, Illinois. They would have celebrated their 65th wedding anniversary this year. He passed away June 22, 2024 and his passing truly broke her heart.

Surviving are her daughters: Cindy (Jeff) Acton of Danville, IL, and Susan (Doug) Canfield of Fayetteville, AR; her grandchildren: Katie (Derek) Davis, Kelly (Andrew) Kaufmann, Cole (Megan) Acton, Shane Canfield and Stephanie (Kurt) Stinnett; and four great-grandchildren, Liyah, Milo and Neil Kaufmann and Chandler Stinnett; one sister, Margaret Steffey; and two brothers: Dean Holycross, and Donald Holycross.

Along with her husband, Mary Lou was preceded in death by her young daughter, Cheryl Lynn, one sister and three brothers.

Mary Lou and Bob lived many years in Homer, IL prior to building their dream home in Oakwood. She retired from Colwell Systems/Patterson Printing in Champaign, IL, in 1999.

As a proficient homemaker, Mary Lou made every meal special, renowned for her exceptional pies and desserts. She was an excellent seamstress, making clothes for her daughters and quilts for ladies in the nursing home. One of her true passions was tending to her beloved garden and canning the fruits of her labor. She found joy in visiting with her Oakwood neighbors and friends who were a great blessing to her.

Above all, Mary Lou cherished her family. She was one of eight children, and she often shared stories of growing up in a large family. She enjoyed hosting family gatherings, particularly Thanksgiving and Christmas Eve. She also enjoyed lively card games with friends and sharing pie with her “ladies”.

Mary Lou was a member of Muncie Baptist Church. Her strong faith led her through life, and she rarely missed a Sunday morning church service.

Visitation will be from 9 to 11 a.m. Wednesday, September 11, 2024, at Muncie Baptist Church, 205 Main Street, Muncie, IL. A celebration of life for Mary Lou will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday, September 11, 2024, also at the church. Burial will be at GAR cemetery in Homer, IL.

Darla Rae (Harsha) Mintz

 Darla Rae (Harsha) Mintz, 64, of Mahomet passed away on Saturday, June 8, 2024, at Barnes-Jewish Hospital in St. Louis, MO surrounded by family and friends. She was born in Champaign on December 21, 1959, the daughter of Ronald and Marcella (Grussing) Harsha. Darla married the love of her life, Martin Mintz, on August 10, 2002, he survives.

Darla is also survived by her 5 children, Shane (Summer Wilson) Beddow, Trina (Phil) Fridel, Alon (Rotem) Mintz, Yael Mintz, Nadav Mintz; 3 grandchildren, Kameryn, Alivia, Brynn; siblings, Barbara (Ron) Frazier, Kristin (Shawn) Megenhardt, Stan (Linda) Harsha, several nieces and nephews as well as her 2 beloved dogs, Sampson and Oliver.

She is preceded in death by her mother Marcella, her father Ronald, and her stepfather Lyle McWethy.

Darla was a fun-spirited soul who took on many passions. After graduating high school, she attended cosmetology school before realizing she preferred the ever-evolving world of Information Technology. She would remain in IT until her retirement. Darla had incredible artistic talent and throughout her life, she enjoyed various types of crafts, including Cricut designs, glass fusion, and Swedish weaving. In her spare time, she could be found reading a good book, spending time on the boat or camping, and spending winters in Florida with Martin.

Visitation will be held from 5 pm to 8 pm on Wednesday, June 12, 2024, at Sunset’s Mahomet Chapel 1102 Churchill Rd. Mahomet, IL. Dorothy Sjuts Bunten

 RANTOUL - Dorothy Sjuts Bunten, 82, of Rantoul died peacefully at home at 7:06 a.m. Sunday (April 14, 2024).

She was born on Feb. 10, 1942, to Henry and Katie (Onnen) Sjuts. She married James Bunten on July 11, 1980, in Rantoul. He survives.

Dorothy attended St. Joseph High School and went on to attend Mr. Michael's school of cosmetology, receiving her cosmetology license.

Dorothy worked in several hair salons and at one time co-owned her own. In 1975, she obtained her bus-driving certificate. She drove for Gifford Grade School and then in 1977 went on to drive for Chanute Air Force Base until the base was closed. At that time, she drove for RTHS until she retired at 2007.

Dorothy was a member of the Ostfriesian Heritage Society for many years as well as an avid bowler.

She is survived by her sister, Louise Sjuts Brownfield of Thomasboro; sons, Deon (Lisa) Mennenga of Rantoul, Derald (Linda) Mennenga of Gifford and Aaron (Cindy) Tuller of Gifford; stepdaughter, Nanci Moore of Enid, Okla.; eight grandchildren; and 14 great-grandchildren.

Dorothy was preceded in death by her parents; sister, Darlene Sjuts Walker; and a grandson.

A funeral service will be at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at the American Lutheran Church, 500 Church St., Rantoul. The Rev. James Lehmann will officiate. Burial will follow in Beckman Cemetery, Thomasboro. Visitation will be for one hour prior to the service at the church.

Florence Ackerman

 GIFFORD - Florene Ackerman, 81, of Gifford passed away peacefully at 8:55 a.m. Friday (May 17, 2024) at Country Health Care & Rehab, Gifford.

Florene was born in Champaign on Dec. 29, 1942, to Mane and Grace Buhs Fruhling.  She married Derald Ackerman on Dec. 4, 1963, at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Flatville.

She is survived by her husband, Derald of Gifford; two sons, Dion (Colleen) Ackerman of Sun Prairie, Wis., Michael (Cheryl) Ackerman of rural Rantoul; six grandchildren, Zachary, Ashlee, Kellie and Lane Ackerman, Danielle (Reid) Butts and Anthony Krizman; and her great-grandson, Brecken.

She is also survived by her sister, Rosetta Suits of Penfield; sister-in-law, Donna DeHaven of Springfield, Mo.; and many nieces, nephews and dear lifelong friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents; parents-in-law, Arnold and Alma Ackerman; and brothers-in-law, Kenneth Suits and Delmar Ackerman.

Florene graduated from Rantoul Township High School in 1960. She retired from Verizon Telephone Company on Rantoul.

She was an active member of Immanuel Lutheran Church, serving on many committees and also working part time for the church. Florene was instrumental in the founding of the German Fall Festival Building in Gifford and also enjoyed cooking for events at the Gifford Community Building.

Florene enjoyed planting flowers, being around her many friends and helping in any way she could. She loved farming with her husband and sons.

Funeral services will be at 11:30 a.m. Tuesday, May 21, at Immanuel Lutheran Church, Flatville, with the Rev. Scott Smith officiating. Burial will follow in Beckman Cemetery. Vernon Loeschen

 Vernon Loeschen, 84 of Paxton, died at 8:14 p.m. Sunday, March 1, 2020, at his home.

Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Friday, March 6, 2020, at Immanuel Lutheran Church, Flatville with Rev. James T. Lehmann officiating. Burial will follow in Beckman Cemetery, Rantoul.

Visitation will be before the service from 9:30 – 11:00 a.m. Friday at the church. Baier Family Funeral Services, Flatville is handling the arrangements.

Vernon was born July 11, 1935 in Champaign County the son of William H. and Henrietta Weis Loeschen. He married Erika Eilts December 4, 1960 at Immanuel Lutheran Church, Flatville. She survives.

Along with his wife, Erika, he is survived by a number of nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, three sisters and one brother.

Vernon graduated from St. Joseph High School in 1953. He served in the United States Army and was stationed in Germany. He was a member of Operating Engineers Local 841 and was a heavy equipment operator for Lehigh Paving, Paxton.

Vernon grew up in the Flatville area. He and Erika moved to Bayles Lake, Loda and then to Paxton for the past 19 years. He was a member of Immanuel Lutheran Church, Flatville and the Martin Luther Men’s Chorus.

Vernon enjoyed music, singing and wintering in the Tampa, Florida area.

Gary Sage

 
Gary Sage, 67, of rural Thomasboro died at 8:36 a.m. Wednesday, December 27, 2023, at Carle Foundation Hospital, Urbana.

Funeral services will be held at 10:00 a.m. Wednesday, January 3, 2024, at Immanuel Lutheran Church, Flatville with Rev. Scott Smith officiating. Burial will follow in Beckman Cemetery, Rantoul.  

Visitation will be from 4:00-7:00 p.m. Tuesday, January 2, in Diers Hall, Immanuel Lutheran Church, Flatville.  Baier Family Funeral Services, Flatville is handling arrangements.

Gary was born December 20, 1956, in Champaign the son of Merle K. and Sylvia Albers Sage.  He married Susan Day Swain.  She survives.

Along with his wife, Susan, he is survived by three sons, Ryan (Angie) Sage of Thomasboro, Chad Sage of Vass, NC; Tyler Sage of Oswego; his mother, Sylvia Sage of Thomasboro; seven grandchildren, Carmen, Haley, Henry, Sophie, Adrian, Avery and Mason; three brothers, Perry (Marcia) Sage, Danny (Sheri) Sage, Troy (Maria) Sage; one niece, Stacey; four nephews, Spencer, Brad, Trent, Clayton and several great nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his father.

Gary graduated from Rantoul Twp. High School in 1975 and was an Honor Roll Student throughout his school years.  He attended Parkland College.  Gary farmed for the past 57 years and his love for farming began when he helped his Opa Sage with cattle.

He was a life-long member of Immanuel Lutheran Church, Flatville and had served on the church council.  He also served on the Farm Service Committee.  He was a member of the Illinois Tractor Pulling Association and the 2019 Points Champion.  Gary was very involved with the I & I Antique Tractor Club and the Half Century of Progress Show.

Gary enjoyed restoring trucks and pedal tractors.  He looked forward to working in his shop and visiting with friends.  His family was the love of his life.

Gary received a heart and kidney transplant in 2017.  The family would like to pay tribute to his donor for giving him over six wonderful years with his family.  They would also like to pay tribute to his brother, Troy, for donating his kidney which also enabled Gary to live a longer life.

Melvin D. Uden

 Melvin D. Uden, 78 of rural Paxton, died at 12:41 p.m. Wednesday, November 15, 2023, at his home.

Funeral services will be held at 10:00 a.m. Tuesday, November 21, 2023, at Immanuel Lutheran Church, Flatville with Rev. Scott Smith officiating.  Burial will follow in Beckman Cemetery, Rantoul.

Visitation will be from 5:00-7:00 p.m. Monday, November 20, in Diers Hall, Immanuel Lutheran Church, Flatville.  Baier Family Funeral Services, Flatville is handling arrangements.

Melvin was born July 9, 1945, in Urbana, the son of Jacob and Alice Roessler Uden.  He married Linda L. McKinley July 16, 1965, at Immanuel Lutheran Church, Flatville.  She preceded him in death July 21, 2012.

He is survived by one daughter, Traci (Michael) Livermore of Mahomet; one son, Travis (Sarah) Uden of Paxton; twin grandchildren, Mason and Morgan Uden; one brother, Raymond Uden of Rantoul; and four sisters, Sylvia Wiese of Ursa, Phyllis Kopecky of Siren, Wisconsin, Barbara (Glen) Bush of Waterloo, Iowa and Lori (Bill) Price of Iowa City, Iowa.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

Melvin graduated from Rantoul Twp. High School in 1963.  He was a bricklayer and owned and operated Melvin Uden Masonry.  

He was a life-long member of Immanuel Lutheran Church, Flatville.  He enjoyed farming and raising Angus cattle.  Melvin was an avid Green Bay Packers fan.

Gery Maury

 URBANA — Gery Maury, 87, of Urbana passed peacefully Saturday (July 15, 2023) in Champaign.

Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday, July 19, at Immanuel Lutheran Church of Flatville with the Rev. Scott Smith officiating. Burial will follow in Beckman Cemetery, Thomasboro. Gery was born on Nov. 28, 1935, in Champaign, to Alvin Gernand III and Wilma Kuykendall Maury. He married Lois Huls on July 28, 1957, at Immanuel Lutheran Church of Flatville. She survives.

Along with his wife of almost 66 years, Lois, Gery is survived by his son, Barry (Sandra) Maury of St. Joseph, Becky (Daniel) Dunlap of Urbana; four grandchildren, Bryan (Katherine) Maury, Ashley (Brad) Houchens, Emily Dunlap (Jake Rahn) and Zachary Dunlap (Kim Sprague); and six great-grandchildren, Brenden, Jansen, Davis A.G. and Parker Maury and Bryson and Brylee Houchens.

Gery was preceded in death by his parents; twin grandsons, Adam and Austin Dunlap; and great-grandson, Camron Houchens.

Gery graduated from Rantoul Township High School in 1955, where he held the scoring record of 1,251 points until 1992. After graduation, he worked as a bookkeeper for Springer Ford of Rantoul. In 1972, Gery opened the sporting goods store Gery & Al’s, which had locations in Rantoul, Champaign and Danville. During that time, he shared his passion for athletics with the surrounding communities. This passion was also instilled in his granddaughter, Ashley, as she is opening a sporting goods store in his memory, Legacy 1251. After Gery’s retirement, he worked in the Pro Shop at the Brookhill Golf Course in Rantoul.

To know Gery was to love him. He never met a stranger, striking up a conversation everywhere he went. Gery was a gentle soul. He always put his wife and family first. Loved ones never left their house without a hug and a kiss on the cheek.

Outside of his family, Gery’s lifelong passion was sports. He played basketball for Rantoul Township High School, where he was inducted into the hall of fame in 1987. He served as grand marshall in the RTHS homecoming parade in 2005. He later joined a softball league through the Champaign Park District and participated in the “Grasshoppers” golf league. He was an avid fan of the Illinois women’s basketball team, and he could be found in his recliner on Sundays during the PGA season. His love for sports has been passed down to his grandchildren and great-grandchildren, you could always find him in the stands at any of their events.

In 2016, Gery was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s. Despite the difficulties he faced with this disease, he maintained his positive personality until the end. You could always count on him for a sarcastic response to your question or a request for a candy bar.

Gery positively impacted the lives of so many and was loved by all. His family was able to say goodbye in his final moments and are thankful that his soul is finally at peace.

PENFIELD — Dorothy May Fruhling, 86, was called home by her heavenly father Sunday (Oct. 30, 2022).

A celebration of Dorothy’s life will be at 11 a.m. Thursday, Nov 3, at Immanuel Lutheran Church, Flatville. Burial will follow in Beckman Cemetery. Visitation will also be held in Dier’s Hall, Immanuel Lutheran Church, Flatville, from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 2, and at 10 a.m. Thursday prior to the ceremony.

Dorothy was born May 14, 1936, in Champaign, the daughter of Ralph and Ella (Ackerman) Uken. She married John J. Fruhling on Sept. 19, 1954, who preceded her in death in 2014. She was also preceded in death by her parents.

She is survived by her five children, Debbie (Mitchell) Frerichs of Royal, Rhonda Fruhling of Iowa City, Iowa, Sharon (Garron) Lukas of Landrum, S.C., Perry (Marlys) Fruhling of Cedar Rapids, Iowa, and Lisa (David) Crowder of Asheville, N.C.

Also surviving are 10 grandchildren, Troy (Kelli), Brandon, Bryce, Garron II (Brittany), Amy (John), Chantal (Antonio), Ashley, Caleb (Emma), Amanda and Ella; and nine great-grandchildren, Hayden, Carson, Colton, Sophie, Garron III, Adan, Nicole, Alejandra and Olen.

She is also survived by her three brothers, Raymond (Elaine), Norman (Darlene) and Darrell (Donna) Uken.

Dorothy was known for her creativity through music (as the children’s choir director at church and the Fruhling Sisters’ mother), as a cake decorator and various other projects. She was also a big support in running the family farm.

From our human perspective, her serving in these capacities were cut short 36 years ago due to an onset of an inoperable benign brain tumor or AVM. Little did we know that God would use her medical issue for her light to shine brighter modeling what true faith and contentment look like. She took on a new role of being an encourager to friends and family and her faith in Jesus was an inspiration to others.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Joni & Friends (Joni Erickson Tada’s ministry of Sharing Hope through Hardship – based on Luke 14:21,23 “Go out quickly … and bring in the poor, the crippled, the blind and the lame … so that my house will be full.”) or Immanuel Lutheran Church.

Max Eugene Baker

Urbana — Max Eugene Baker, 93, of Urbana passed away Monday (May 2, 2022).

Max was born on April 3, 1929, in Champaign, to Florence and Lee Baker. He married Bernida (Bert) Eiskamp on June 24, 1956. She survives.

Also surviving are two children, Gary (Michelle) Baker of Champaign and Lori (Jim Hallett) Baker of Terre Haute, Ind.; four grandchildren, Lindsay (Jeff) Zanoni, Westin Orberson, Tobias Baker and Catlyn Baker; two great-grandchildren, Mattison and Oliver Zanoni; and one sister, Susie (Robert) Eaton of Channahon.

He was preceded in death by his parents and his brothers, Lee Jr. and Don Baker.

Max was a veteran of the U.S. Army. He was a member of Local 218 as a sheet metal worker.

Funeral services will be at noon Saturday, May 7, at Morgan Memorial Home, 1304 Regency Drive West, Savoy. Burial will be in Beckman Cemetery, Flatville. Visitation will be from 10 a.m. to noon Saturday at the funeral home.

Alivn "Al" H. Ackerman

 Alvin “Al” H. Ackerman, 90, of Urbana, passed away peacefully at his home, Urbana, on May 2, 2022.

Al was born March 17, 1932 in Champaign County, son of Harm and Minnie (Aden) Ackerman. He married Verna (Ihnen) Ackerman November 7, 1954 at Immanuel Lutheran Church, Flatville. She preceded him in death October 24, 2018.

Al was a Korean War veteran. He trained in the military police camp and then spent 16 months in railway security in South Korea. He was a lifelong member of the VFW and American Legion.

After returning home, Al worked as a carpenter for Estes Construction Co, Rantoul, for three years, then as a foreman for Hudson Construction and Huron Development, Rantoul, for nine years, then as general foreman for English Bros, Champaign, for 20 years before retiring. He was an honorary member of Carpenter and Joiners of America for over 30 years. In his spare time he enjoyed drawing up floor plans for new homes. Al also farmed part time his entire life.

Al and his wife, Verna, loved playing golf. They moved to Florida and enjoyed the sport year round for 21 years. They were married 63 years when his wife passed. Al was preceded in death by his wife, their son, Gary, his parents and brother Merl and sister Evelyn

Al is survived by two children, Rick (Annette) Ackerman of Urbana, Connie Wolken (Jeff Dore) of North Venice, Florida; four grandchildren, Jason (Kelly) Ackerman of Edwardsville, Kelly (Kenny) Carter of St. Joseph, Brooke Wolken (Jacob Herbert) of Paxton and Stephanie (Jason) Maier of Thomasboro; and seven great-grandchildren, Maddux, Payton, Lillian, Avery, Gunner, Emma and Jaxon.

Visitation will be from 9:30-10:30 am Thursday, May 5th at Prince of Peace Church 802 E Douglas, St. Joseph, with funeral services immediately following. Burial will be in Beckman Cemetery.

James I. Cotter

 

James I. Cotter, 55, of St. Joseph passed away at 7:53 A.M. Monday August 30, 2021 at Carle Foundation Hospital, Urbana.

 Jim was born July 1, 1966 in Paxton. He was the son of Kenneth and Frances (Peters) Cotter of Piper City.

 He married Susan Gronewald on July 18, 1992. She survives.

 He is also survived by his children; Elena Kae Cotter of Normal, Austin James Cotter and Caleb Addison Cotter both of St. Joseph. Brother Robert (Ronda) Cotter of Piper City. Three nephews Kenny and John Cotter of Piper City and Nick Miller of Rochelle. One niece Hannah Miller of Weldon. His Mother Frances Cotter of Piper City. His in-laws Roger and Betty Gronewald of Royal.

 Jim was preceded in death by his father Kenneth and his grandparents.

 To know Jim was to love Jim. He was an avid Cubs, Illini and SJO Spartan Fan. He worked for over 30 years in the University of Illinois Library system. In the evenings and weekends Jim was a freelance writer covering the Fighting Illini, SJO Spartans and other local teams. He wrote for the St. Joseph Leader, St. Joseph Record, Danville Commercial News, Orange and Blue News. He also did radio spots for WGCY in Gibson City.. Jim was happiest when he was in the bleachers or along the sidelines watching his kids activities and the games/events he was covering. Jim coached his kids in T-ball, baseball, softball and basketball.

 In honor of Jim please wear your favorite teams shirt to the visitation and service.

Geraldine "Geri" Martin

 Geraldine “Geri” Martin, 81 of Gifford passed away at 9:15PM, Tuesday, April 6, 2021 at home.

Funeral services will be 11:00AM, Saturday, April 10, 2021 at American Lutheran Church, Rantoulwith Pastor Matt Bahnfleth officiating.  Visitation will be from 10:00 to 11:00 AM Saturday, April 10, 2021 at the church.  Burial will be at Beckman Cemetery, Thomasboro.  Freese Funeral Home, St. Joseph is handling arrangements.

Mrs. Martin was born October 2, 1939 at Champaign County, IL, a daughter Heye and Martha Busboom Lubben.  She married Henry Martin on October 2, 1960 in Flatville, he preceded in death on April 27, 1990.

Surviving are two daughters; Barbara (Monty) Viets of Buffalo, MO and Deborah (Rick) Tyler of Gifford, two granddaughters; Victoria Viets of Hermitage, Mo and Lauren Viets of Shawnee, KS, a sister; Rosemary Ellis of Penfield, sisters in law, brothers in law, and many nieces and nephews.  She was preceded in death by her parents, a grandson Shawn Martin and a brother Leonard Lubben.

She was a member of American Lutheran Church, Rantoul, and Champaign County Home Extension.  She retired from the Rantoul School District after 30 years.

Vernon "Vernie" Lee Ehler

 RANTOUL — Vernon “Vernie” Lee Ehler passed away peacefully on Sunday (Jan. 17, 2021) at home in Rantoul, surrounded by his family. He was 87 years old.

The youngest of five children, Vernon was born in Urbana to John and Tida (Duitsman) Ehler on Nov. 12, 1933. He graduated from Rantoul Township High School in 1951, where he excelled at baseball and football. It was here that Vernon would meet the love of his life, Kay, whom he married shortly after her graduation in 1953. Drafted by the Army in 1956, Vernon and Kay would continue their adventure in Germany, where they spent two years before returning back to the Rantoul area. Upon his return, Vernon began his life’s work as a farmer, primarily with Seeber Farms for over 60 harvests.

Above all of Vernon’s accomplishments, he was best known for his devotion to God, his family, his relatives and his friends. There was nothing in life that made him happier than taking his family out to dinner or ensuring he had plenty of quarters for the children to play pool during the annual family vacation to Chetek, Wis. He was a man of faith, every Sunday he could be found at American Lutheran Church in Rantoul, where he was a member for over 50 years. Vernon was a kind, generous, hard-working man whose spirit will continue to live on with his family and community for years to come. His was truly a life well lived that is worth celebrating.

Vernon leaves behind his high school sweetheart and loving wife of 67 years, Kay (Sparks) Ehler. In addition to his wife, Vernon is survived by his son, Dane (Lisa) Ehler, and daughter, Danette (Dave) Higinbotham; six grandchildren, who absolutely adored him; and three great-grandchildren.

Vernon was predeceased by his daughter, Dana Buerkett; sonin- law, Jon Buerkett; granddaughter, Morgan Buerkett; brothers, Roy and Ray Ehler; and sisters, Irene Franzen and Nora Dabney.

In addition, his family would like to thank Vicki and Carol for their loving care, making sure he was comfortable in the final chapter of his life.

Vernon will be laid to rest alongside his loving parents in Beckman Cemetery, Thomasboro, at a private ceremony. In his honor, his family asks that you take a moment out of your day to put a smile on someone’s face and lend a helping hand, just as he would have done. Lux Memorial Chapel, Rantoul, is handling the arrangements.
