Jon E. Mohr

 NEWMAN — Jon E. Mohr, 82, died in Newman on Sunday, March 1, 2026.

He was the son of Ernst and Eugenia Mohr of Allerton, the oldest of four siblings. He graduated from ABL High School as valedictorian in 1961 and completed his bachelor and master’s degrees at the University of Illinois in 1966 and 1973.

Jon had worked with Deere, the UI and Allerton Implement Company. He also taught for the University of Phoenix. Jon resided in Crawfordsville, Ind., until 2021, when he moved to Newman.

He is survived by his daughter, Laura in England; sons, Todd in California, Bob in Illinois and Douglas in Georgia; and his muchloved grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

His parents; wife, Kay; and a granddaughter preceded him in death.

Jon was baptized and confirmed at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Broadlands. He loved to sing and had recorded favorite hymns. His children and grandchildren were especially dear to him, and his trust was in his Lord Jesus.

Roger Willis Rudder

 Villa Grove - Roger Willis Rudder, 90, of Villa Grove passed away peacefully on Thursday, Jan. 29, 2026, at Newman Rehab and Healthcare Center in Newman.

Roger was born on Jan. 6, 1936, at Jarman Hospital in Tuscola, to Ralph and Oakie (McKee) Rudder. He married Mary DeMoss on June 26, 1955, at Pleasant Hill Methodist Church in rural Sidney.

He is survived by his loving and very devoted wife, Mary Rudder; son Don (Laura) Rudder; grandchildren Brandon (Jenna) Rudder and Rachel Rudder; and great-grandchildren Holly, Rowan, Bryce, Addysen and Emersyn Rudder.

He was preceded in death by his parents; sister Kathleen Courson; son David Rudder; a niece; and a nephew.

Roger grew up in Allerton and graduated from ABL High School in 1954. He worked at Courson Hardware for 38 years. Roger enjoyed camping with family and friends, collecting International Harvester toy tractors, square-dancing, and woodworking. Roger got great joy from being with his grandchildren.

A visitation will be held from 1 to 2 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 1, at Joines Funeral Home in Villa Grove. Graveside services will be held at Locust Grove Cemetery in Philo immediately following the visitation.

Agnes Hazel Martinie Watson

 PLANO, TEXAS — Agnes Hazel Martinie Watson, 92, of Plano, Texas, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, Dec. 30, 2025, after influenza exacerbated her existing heart condition.

Throughout her life, Agnes was concerned about the well-being of people around her and never failed to recognize the love and care she received.

Agnes Beck was born on Nov. 22, 1933, in Cortland, N.Y., the 11th child of Ida Pauline (Weinke) Beck and Joseph Beck. She spent her early years on the family farm in Broadlands. Agnes had many memories of growing up on the farm, walking barefoot to school (as she didn’t like her shoes) and the joy of helping to care for the animals.

Agnes graduated from Allerton High School then went on to attend business school in Urbana. She was initially employed at the Farm Bureau. She married Douglas Watson, and they began a family. Her five children are Belinda Sue Corker (Vince), Paul D. Watson (Michelle), Daniel L. Watson (Margaret), Phyllis I. Hasty (David) and Nancy G. Bosch.

During their early years, Agnes worked at different restaurants and other jobs in Champaign. These jobs taught her some important lessons in cooking that she used throughout her life. Once her children were in school, Agnes got the job that no man said she would ever get — that of working on the line at Kraft Foods. It was a physical job that required meticulous attention, but that didn’t stop Agnes. She stayed at Kraft for 25 years before “retiring” when her cheese line was discontinued. After Kraft, Agnes picked up a part-time office job at Champaign Surplus. Agnes gathered the Wachtels into her life, and she loved Lynn and Ira as members of her family. Agnes retired from Champaign Surplus at age 77, saying she would have continued working longer if the work had not become so computerized.

Agnes loved all her family. Along with her five children, she was involved with her five grandchildren, Heather Robles (Nick), Ryan Corker (Behka), Lauren Shaner (Jeremy) and Weston and Wiley Hasty. She was also very pleased to welcome five great-grandchildren into this world.

Agnes was raised by her mother with two of her brothers. Her father raised the other children in New York with his new wife. Agnes kept in touch with all of those in her family and often coordinated get-togethers in Illinois or in New York.

Agnes loved cooking and provided many dishes for different functions, including her chicken with homemade noodles. She also made a great bean salad, strawberry pie and cranberry pear relish. She was involved in the Lutheran Woman’s Missionary League (LWML) at Osman Lut h e r a n Church and the Champaign County Home and Community Education Group.

Agnes married Carol Martinie in 1995. He was the “love of her life” and brought her joy every day. Carol had children of his own, and Agnes was happy to have more people to bring into her fold. Carol passed away in December 2015.

In 2019, Agnes moved to Plano to be near her son and daughter-in-law, Dan and Margaret Watson. She eventually moved into Hope Springs Memory Care, where she was supported and cared for. She returned all the love and support, never failing to provide daily hugs and a cheerful welcome to all the caregivers. At Hope Springs, Agnes developed her artistic side, completing many crafts and coloring the most beautiful pictures. She also enjoyed all the entertainment: dancers, singers, musicians, along with movies and parties on the patio.

Agnes will be remembered and missed by her children; grandchildren; great-grandchildren; and stepchildren, Kevin, Richard (Bobbie), Timothy (Catheryne) Martinie, Jane Cook and Debra (Ed) Tiedemann, and their children. She will also be missed by her siblings Frank Beck (Lois), David Beck, Helen Carter (Robert) and Jeanette Beck (George’s wife); and multiple nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by her husbands, Douglas Watson of Urbana and Carol Martinie of Fisher; and siblings Clara Hoyt (Raymond) of Brewerton, N.Y., Esther Roux (Francis) of Aberdeen, Md., Raymond Beck of Broadlands, Loren Beck (Mary) of Alma, George Beck (Jeanette) of Marcellus, N.Y., Martha of Cleveland and Lawrence, Elizabeth and Mary Beck, who passed during their childhood. Agnes will also be remembered and missed by the caregivers at Hope Springs in Plano.

A celebration of life service will be at 3 p.m. Monday, Jan. 5, at Messiah Lutheran Church, Plano. There will be a funeral service at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 10, at Immanuel Lutheran Church, Osman, with a reception to follow. Agnes will be laid to rest in Immanuel Lutheran Church of Broadlands Cemetery in Broadlands.

David Lareau

 

David Lareau, 69, of Allerton, Illinois, passed peacefully in his home on Tuesday, October 14th with his family by his side. He leaves behind his wife Phyllis Lareau and children Angie (Scott) Duensing, Eric (Alex) Lareau, and Aaron (Nicole) Lareau; as well as his 9 grandchildren: Kiley Duensing, Avah Lareau, Kara Duensing, Kadyn Fitz, Leah Duensing, Makenna Lareau, Layne Lareau, Berkley Headid, and Lilliana Lareau. He also leaves behind several nieces and nephews. 

He is preceded in death by his father, Wayne Lareau; his mother, Mary Lareau, and his two brothers Dane Lareau and Dan Lareau.

David and Phyllis were high school sweethearts and enjoyed 49 years of marriage together. David started his career working on his family farm and then worked at FS and Sygma. David ended his career doing what he enjoyed most - driving a semi for McComas Trucking. David loved riding his side by side around town with his dog Charlie. He loved to visit with all of his friends. He spent the last few years of his life enjoying it to the fullest with Charlie and Phyllis by his side.

Marilyn Mae Lyons Courson

 

ALLERTON - Marilyn Mae Lyons Courson was born at home on July 19, 1934, to Russell and Mabel (Porter) Lyons. She passed away on Friday (May 30, 2025) at the Newman Rehabilitation & Health Care Center.

Marilyn married Billy Lee Courson on Aug. 21, 1955. They began life in Allerton in their first house, built by Billy.

They raised three daughters, Cindy (Dan) Brown, Becky (Jay) Carter and Amy Courson. They have two grandchildren, Christopher Brown and Breanna Carter; as well as two great-grandchildren, Jackson and Arabella. Marilyn also had many nieces, nephews and cousins.

Marilyn was preceded in death by her husband, Billy; parents, Russell and Mabel; and brother, Lynn, and his wife, Rita.

Marilyn was a member of the Allerton Church of Christ. She spent many years playing the piano and organ as well as teaching vacation Bible school.

She was an active member of the Allerton Saddle Club, a member of the Allerton Woman's Club and was on the Steering Committee for the Allerton Centennial.

She loved playing bridge with the Merry Matrons and bowling on leagues in Broadlands and Homer. She started painting with oil and acrylics in 1972. She gifted many special pieces to family and friends. She spent over a decade taking her painted pieces to the Covered Bridge Festival in Bridgeton, Ind.

Marilyn's greatest passion was for NASCAR. She attended many races sporting her Earnhardt colors. Her pride and joy was her vast Earnhardt collection known as "The Shrine." She collected memorabilia for both Dale Sr. and Dale Jr. Marilyn even has her own brick in front of the NASCAR Hall of Fame in North Carolina.

In her later years, Marilyn decided to become a resident of Florida. From Florida, she cruised the world, eventually visiting nearly 30 countries. Her favorite location was Ephesus, Turkey, where the Apostle Paul preached. She will be greatly missed by family and friends.

A celebration of Marilyn's life will be held at a later date.

James P. Compton

 James (Jim) P. Compton went to his Heavenly home to celebrate Mother’s Day at 1:00 am on Sunday, May 11, 2025. Jim was born at home on January 3, 1938 in Allerton, Illinois to Joseph and Lorene (Braedel) Compton.  He graduated from ABL high school in 1956 and went to work on his brother Gerald’s farm after high school. After farm work, Jim went on to work at Producers Dairy in Danville, before being hired at Bohn Heat and Transfer, where he worked for 45 years before retiring in 2008. 

Jim married Carol (Cooper) Compton on September 13, 1959 and they had one son, Michael. They were married for 22 years before going their separate ways. On August 9, 1985, Jim married Patricia (Samson) Harris.  

Jim was a loving husband, father, and grandfather. He was preceded in death by his wife Patricia Compton, who passed on October 31, 2024. He was also preceded in death by his parents, his brothers William, Kenneth, and Gerald Compton; along with his sisters Dolores Richard, Janet Branch, Juanita Dowler, and Betty Cain.  He is survived by one sister Rose Hill of McKinney Texas. He is also survived by his son, Michael Compton (Kristine) and grandsons Adam Compton (Anessa) and Jonathan Compton. Additionally he is survived by his seven bonus children and their spouses Donna Pruitt (Sonny), Gordon Harris (Linda), Mari Lynn Peters (Ken), Cheryl Koester (John), Keith Harris (Theresa), Barb Back (Randy), and Mindi Beaumont (Mike). 

He also leaves behind bonus grandkids (15 grandsons, 6 granddaughters, 10 great-grandsons, 7 great-granddaughters, and 2 great-great-grandchildren) along with numerous nieces, nephews, and other extended family.

Jim enjoyed woodworking, gardening,  and spending time with family. He loved traveling to see new places. He was a faithful member of Curtis Road Church of God.

Visitation will be from 12:00 pm  to 2:00 pm. Thursday, May 15, at Freese Funeral Home, 407 N Bourne St. Tolono. Funeral proceedings will take place immediately following at the same location. Interment will follow in Pleasant Ridge Cemetery, near Newman, where he will be laid to rest near other members of his family. Family members will serve as pallbearers.

Gerhardt Richard Mohr

 
Gerhardt Richard Mohr, 84, of rural Homer, IL, passed away on November 6, 2024, at Carle Hospital, Urbana with his daughter by his side. He was preceded in death by his parents whom he cared for until their passing in 1998, and his brothers, Hilbert and Frederick Mohr.

Gerhardt was born on August 21, 1940, in Jarman Hospital, Tuscola, IL, to John H. and Evelyn Reifsteck Mohr. He attended school in Allerton which later consolidated with Broadlands and Longview to form ABL. His 1958 graduating class was the first to hold commencement in the newly constructed building. He was a charter member of the ABL Future Farmers of America chapter and was active in FFA and school interests throughout his life.

From 1958 to 1962, Gerhardt attended the University of Illinois where he graduated with a BS in Animal Science and received his commission as a Lieutenant in the Quartermaster Corps through the U of I Army ROTC program. He served honorably in the U.S. Army in Germany for four years during the Berlin Wall Crisis before being released from active duty into the reserves. Upon returning to the family farm, Gerhardt, along with his brother Fred, built a substantial pork producing operation. He was an avid farmer- grain and livestock. Gerhardt worked with the Champaign-Vermilion County Pork Producers, served on the Illinois Farm Bureau Young Farmers Board from 1968 to 1972, and was elected to the ABL School Board and later the Heritage School Board. He kept in touch with his military colleagues from the 14th Quartermaster Battalion and was a lifelong Illini fan.  Gerhardt was a faithful member of Immanuel Lutheran Church where he was dedicated to many activities including the choir. He was also a member of the Vermilion County Farm Bureau, the Homer American Legion Post, and the Singing Men of 'GNN. 

Gerhardt was married to Gisela Zumkeller and has two children- Christina Mohr, MD of New York, and Richard Mohr, LTC (R) of Colorado, and 2 grandchildren- Nicholas and Maxine Mohr. Gerhardt loved his family and grandchildren deeply. He remained active in farming and pork production until 2017. Gerhardt's strong faith, sustained by the grace of his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, guided him throughout his life. He consistently spoke of "God's Blessings" to others.

Services will be held at Immanuel Lutheran Church, Broadlands, IL, on Saturday, May 24, 2025, at 11 a.m. with the Singing Men of 'GNN and the American Legion Post 201 from Newman performing. David J. Bosch

 

David J Bosch, 62, of Broadlands, IL, left this world way too soon on December 23, 2024, when his heart suddenly stopped in an ambulance.  He left Traci, his wife of 37 years, and his sons and daughters-in-law, Jacob (Lauren) and Clayton (Larissa), in shock, lost, and in grief.  He was so proud of his sons and taught them everything in life.  He taught them how to love and laugh.  He taught them to build and repair homes, and to repair engines and farm equipment.  They called him often just to chat or to get a second opinion on any given subject.  Most of all, he taught them to love and honor God.

Dave left behind two beautiful grandbabies that filled his heart with joy.  His phone was full of pictures of Scarlett and Maxwell.  He loved to hear them say “Hi Papa”.  He left behind his mother and stepfather Vera and Don Maase.  He left his siblings and spouses, Mark (Marsha) Bosch, Linda (Rudy) Huber, and Robert (Tanya) Bosch.  He left his mother-in-law, Edna Fruhling, and Traci’s siblings, Tami (Mike) Fruhling-Voges, Teri (Tim) Frerichs, and Trini (Fred) Fruhling-Bensyl.  Dave left many nieces and nephews.  He will be missed so much by all.

Dave loved life and gave himself in every way.  He was a baseball coach, boy scout leader, and booster club member.  He was on the Broadlands-Longview Fire Protection District for 10 years, and recently rejoined as a Trustee.  He was on the Heritage School Board for 16 years, ending as President of the Board.  He was Trustee for Raymond Township and just recently refiled to run again.  He loved being active in the I & I Antique Tractor and Gas Engine Club and was Co-Vice President.  He was a Lector and Eucharistic Minister for Immaculate Conception Catholic Church and prepared the church for Mass every Sunday.  He loved meeting and talking to people and could not go anywhere without running into someone he knew.

Dave graduated from ABL High School in Broadlands and from Parkland College in Champaign.  He worked for Allerton Implement Company in Allerton until they closed, starting as a mechanic and ending in sales.  After AIC closed, a kind-hearted man named Norman Duitsman asked Dave to join his staff at Shaff Implement.  Dave loved every minute of selling New Holland equipment and Walker lawn mowers, but he was starting to mention retirement and future plans more often.  Dave bled “Green” and collected antique John Deere equipment.  He could tell his boys everything about a John Deere tractor and quizzed them often to make sure they remembered the facts.  However, his blood was starting to become “Bluer” after attending New Holland conferences to learn more about their tractors and combines.

Dave is now joining his loved ones in Heaven, including his caring father and stepmother, William and Jane Bosch, his beloved Aunt Rita Bosch, and his wonderful father-in-law, Donald Fruhling.  We cannot believe we are having to write this.  He will truly be missed in this world and will be thought of and talked to in Heaven every day.  Dave was the most loving, laid-back husband and father.  He was our best friend.

A Celebration of Life and Mass of Christian Burial will be held at St. Thomas Catholic Church in Philo, IL  at 10:30 A.M. Monday December 30, 2024. Fr. Keith Walder will officiate. Burial will be in St. Joseph Cemetery in Bongard, IL.  Visitation will be at St. Thomas Catholic Church, Philo on Sunday from 2:00 P.M. to 4:00 P.M.

 In lieu of flowers mass intentions may be made to St. Thomas Catholic Church.

Deana F. Dohme

 
F. Dohme of Champaign passed away peacefully on Thursday morning August 15, 2024 at Tuscola Health Care Facility in Tuscola.

Deanna was born on March 26, 1942 to Clarence and Bertha (Rahn) Wienke.

She is survived by her two children; Libby Dohme of Champaign and Darren Dohme of Broadlands.

She was preceded In death by her parents, Clarence and Bertha Wienke, two brothers and five sisters.

Deanna graduated from ABL High School.  She loved classical music and had a beautiful singing voice.  She lived in Naples, Florida for 26 years.  She loved the sunshine and taking her 4-legged companion, Murphy, to the beach.

Graveside service and burial will be held at 11:00 AM, Thursday, August 22, 2024 at the Broadlands Immanuel Lutheran Church Cemetery with Pastor Sharp officiating.

Chad M. Wilsey

 
Chad M. Wilsey, 46, of Broadlands passed away at 4:40 P.M. Sunday June 23, 2024 at Carle Foundation Hospital, Urbana.

 Chad was born January 5, 1978 the son of Michael and Vicki (Brandon) Wilsey.

 He is survived by his parents of Rankin. Sister Nikki (Jamie)Davison of Homer. Brother Jarin (Julie) Wilsey of Alvin. Sister-in-law Laura Wilsey of Avon, IN. Nieces and nephews; Kane and Clair Davison, Eric and Landon Wilsey, Henry, Hattie and Brynn Wilsey.

 He was preceded in death by his brother Shandy Wilsey, uncle Jim Wilsey, cousin Easton Wilsey, Paternal grandparents Clifford and Marjorie Wilsey, maternal grandparents Don and Adora Strohl.

 Chad was a man of many talents, including percussion and working complex tech and electronic projects, and was inspired to always learn something new. He was passionate about astronomy and made a trip to see the solar eclipse, which made him very emotional as he watched in awe and wonder. Chad was a big fan of supporting the Illini basketball and football teams as well as his beloved St. Louis Cardinals.

 Chad was always known to have a smile on his face and cherished the moments he shared making memories with others. He never complained about anything, no matter the magnitude of adversity he was experiencing. He so loved kids and making them laugh, especially with his Barney impersonation.

 Memorials may be made to the Chad Wilsey Memorial Fund at any local Longview Bank.

Alice Madge (Trimble) Warters

 

ALLERTON - Alice Madge (Trimble) Warters, 90, of Allerton, beloved wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother, passed peacefully on Tuesday (June 4, 2024) at Kirby Medical Hospital, Monticello.

Madge was the daughter of Orval and Belle (Bishop) Trimble of Newman. She was a graduate of Newman High School and attended Eastern Illinois University in Charleston.

Madge married Dean Warters on Sept. 21, 1952. They were married for 58 years, until Dean passed in December 2010.

The couple had four children, Kim Warters of Allerton, Ginger Stanfield of Charleston, Tammy (Gary) Frick of St. Joseph and Tim Warters of Allerton.

Madge was preceded in death by their infant son, Kim (1953); son Tim (2005); husband, Dean (2010); parents, Orval and Belle Trimble; brothers, Gene and Doyle Trimble; and sister-in-law, Anne Trimble (who was like a sister to Madge).

Madge and Dean farmed northeast of Allerton. They also raised hogs and polled shorthorn cattle. Madge loved every aspect of the farm life. She felt the best place to raise a family was on a farm. Madge played a vital role in all the work on their farm … from driving the combine during harvest to cooking, she did it all. Besides her family, farming and raising livestock was one of the joys of her life. Their family traveled all over the Midwest to countless state and county fairs showing their livestock. Madge was a charter member of the Shorthorn "Lassie" organization, which was very involved with the promotion of the polled shorthorn cattle breed. She served on most of the various boards and committees related to this organization, being named National Lassie of the Year in 1981.

Another passion (besides her family) was music. Her brother Gene started an orchestra in Newman when he was in high school. Madge started playing saxophone in the Gene Trimble Orchestra when she was 12 years old. She filled in for several members in the saxophone section as they left for World War II. She played first sax for over 60 years in his band. The band also performed as a "Clown" band for entertaining lots of people and various events. The clown band played at the Illinois State Fair for over 50 years. She was looking forward to playing again this summer with the Charleston Community Band, which is directed by her daughter Ginger.

Madge loved the joy of worshiping and working with the members of the United Methodist Church in Allerton.

Throughout her entire life, Madge's biggest priority was her family. She loved being around them every chance she had.

Visitation will be from 9 to 11 a.m. Saturday, June 15, at St. Joseph United Methodist Church, with the celebration of life beginning at 11 a.m. Pastor Clyde Snyder will officiate.

Marjorie Wolf

 ALLERTON - Marjorie Wolf, 96, of Allerton passed away at 5:35 a.m. Wednesday, April 17, 2024, at Newman Healthcare in Newman.

There will be a private family burial at GAR Cemetery in Homer with the Rev. Clyde Snyder officiating. Cremation rites have been accorded. Homer Funeral and Cremation Services, 708 S. Main St., Homer, is assisting the family.

Marjorie was born June 15, 1927, in Homer, the daughter of Thomas and Nellie McClaren Morrison. She married Leslie Wolf on April 28, 1946, in Danville. He preceded her in death on Jan. 26, 2016.

Survivors include her daughter, Carole (Dave) Gillenwater of Allerton; two grandchildren, Taylor (Scott) Freidel and Robert (Chelsea) Anderson; three great-grandchildren; and a sister, Beverly Umbarger of Homer.

She was preceded in death by five siblings.

Marjorie was a member of Allerton United Methodist Church and graduated from Homer High School in 1945. She enjoyed shopping, camping and playing euchre.

Paul Raymond Mohr

 Paul Raymond Mohr, 94, of Broadlands, Illinois passed away peacefully, Tuesday night Jan 9 at Clark Lindsey Village Nursing Home, Urbana.  The funeral will be at Immanuel Lutheran Church, Broadlands at 11:00 AM on Friday, January 12, 2024 with Pastor John Sharp officiating.  Visitation will proceed the funeral at the church from 9:30 to 11:00AM.  Burial will be at the Immanuel Lutheran Church Cemetery following the funeral.

Paul was born April 14, 1929 in Broadlands.  He was a son of Howard and Anna Bergfield Mohr Schumacher.  He had one sister, Margaret Collier of Champaign and one brother, Howard (Dutch) Mohr of Homer, both preceded him is death.  He married Alice Wienke on November 29, 1954, she passed from cancer on June 29, 1980.  He was also preceded in death by his friend of many years, Delores Gustafson of Paxton.

Survivors include; his daughters, Paula Mohr of Broadlands, and Angela (Carl) Smith of Allerton.  He has two grandchildren; Allison (Jordan) Lowe and Parker (Erin) Smith, and three great-grandchildren; Carter and Atlee Lowe and Emma Smith.

Paul was a graduate of Longview High School and served in the Navy’s Air Division.  He was a farmer in the Broadlands area his whole working career.  He loved to golf and traveled a lot and had seen many places abroad.  He so looked forward to the coffee hour each morning at the Broadlands Restaurant and visiting with his friends there.  His family and especially his great grandchildren were his pride and joy.

Betty Colleen Wienke

 URBANA — Betty Colleen Wienke, 91, passed away (June 22, 2023) peacefully at home with her loving family by her side.

Betty was born to Edgar and Lois Fernandes in Newman, on March 27, 1932. She grew up on the Fernandes family farm outside Newman, where she was raised learning the value of hard work and the love of family.

Betty attended school in Newman. She married John C. Wienke on Aug. 28, 1948, at the Newman Methodist Church. They had two children, Pam and Stan. Betty took great pride in being a mom and a farmer’s wife. She maintained a meticulous home and helped run the Wienke family farm. All the while she worked at Thornsboroughs, the Allerton Diner and the Broadlands Grocery Store.

After her husband passed away, Betty worked at Homer Hardware and in Champaign at Do It Best Hardware. She was very well-known for her wit and her ability to help anyone. In fact, she maintained her independence and worked until she was 90. Betty loved keeping busy and being with her friends and family.

In the past year, she moved into Brookdale Assisted Living in Urbana, where she truly enjoyed having fun everyday. She was a hard worker with a loving soul.

Betty is survived by her son Stan and his wife Katie. Betty had seven grandchildren, Scott (Amanda McWilliams) Schaub, Jason (Ashley Apgar) Wienke, Jenna (Tyler) Flessner, Johanna (Paul) Foran, John (Heather)

Wienke, Jud (Kenzie) Wienke and Haven Hatfield. She had 16 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband John, her daughter Pam Wiltfang, her brothers, Charles, Donald, Harold and Kendall and sister, Marilyn.

Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Immanuel Lutheran Church, 390 CR 2400 East, Broadlands.

Ella "Mickie" Wyant

 ALLERTON — Ella “Mickie” Wyant, 79, of Allerton passed away at 11:55 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 6, 2022, at Carle Foundation Hospital, Urbana.

Funeral services will be 12:30 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 10, 2022, at Freese Funeral Home, Sidney. Burial will be in Locust Grove Cemetery, Philo. Visitation will be from 11a.m. to 12:30p.m. Saturday at the funeral home.

Mrs. Wyant was born Feb. 23, 1943, in Tuscola, a daughter of Eulas and Willadean Copas Deckard. She married Billy Dean Wyant on Aug. 25, 1961; he preceded her in death on Aug. 31, 2017.

Surviving are two sons, Jeff (Madonna) Wyant and Wayne Wyant, both of Sidney; eight grandchildren, Jenna (Travis Yoder) of Cannelburg, Ind., Jared (Hannah) Wyant of East Lynn, Brennen (Maggie) Black and Matthew Brady, both of Sidney, and Tanner, Cody, Mason and Brynna Wyant, all of Allerton; a great-grandchild, Bennett Yoder of Cannelburg, Ind.; and a sister, Pat (Robert) Constans of Danville.

She was preceded in death by her parents and a half-brother, H.B. Cary.

She enjoyed doing puzzles, playing the mandolin and guitar, singing old country songs, going to garage sales and mostly hummingbirds.

Martha Hurt

 Martha Hurt 96, of Fishers, IN formerly of Allerton passed away at 8:10 P.M. Thursday June 2, 2022 at Hamilton Trace of Fishers.

 Graveside services will be at 2:30 P.M. Sunday June 12, 2022 at Pleasant Ridge Cemetery, Allerton. visitation will be held from Noon to 2:00 P.M. at Freese Funeral Home 302 E. Grand Ave. St. Joseph prior to the graveside service.

 Martha was born December 30, 1925 at Spring Valley, Il the daughter of Hobart Clay and Florence (Purcell) Robinson. She married Eli H. Hurt in 1946. He preceded her in 1996.

 She is survived by her son John (Kay) Hurt of Iowa. Four grandchildren and several great-grandchildren. Two sisters Florence Rennolds of Tucson, AZ and Sarabeth Ford of Sidell.

 She was preceded in death by her parents, daughter Nancy Kelley and several brothers and sisters.

 Martha taught school in Allerton and Ogden for many decades.

 She retired to Ft. Meyers Beach, Fl . When she lived in Allerton she was active in the Allerton Methodist Church.

Chris E. Kerns

Chris E. Kerns, 59, of Hammond, IL, passed away at 9:40 a.m., Thursday, April 21, 2022 at the Northwestern Memorial Hospital, Chicago, IL 

Funeral Services will be held at 2:00 p.m., Wednesday, April 27, 2022 at the Hilligoss Shrader Funeral Home, 66 East US Highway 36, Atwood, IL with Rev. Don Gerkin officiating. Burial will follow in the Hammond Cemetery, Hammond, IL. 

Visitation will be held from 4 to 8 p.m., Tuesday at the funeral home. 

Chris was born on October 29, 1962 in Decatur, IL, the son of Donald and Charlotte “Darlene” Bobbett Kerns. He married Cynthia L. Eddings on October 10, 1992. She survives.  

Also surviving are his daughters: Amanda (Jordan) Pfeifer and Kathryn “Katie” Kerns both of Hammond, grandson: Brentley Pfeifer and several cousins. 

He was preceded in death by his parents and grandparents: Eldon and Pauline Bobbett. 

In lieu of flowers, memorials are suggested to the ALAH FFA Alumni, Heritage FFA Program or Tuscola FFA Alumni. 

Chris received his bachelor and master’s degrees both from the University of Illinois. He taught agriculture at Atwood-Hammond, Saybrook-Arrowsmith, Heritage and Tuscola High Schools for 35 years. 

He also was the elementary principal at Heritage school district. After his retirement, he worked as a substitute teacher and taught agriculture part-time at Parkland College.  Chris was very dedicated to youth Ag education and was active with the Illinois FFA Alumni.

He loved farming, working outside, horseback riding, camping and raising animals.

Tammy G. Williams

 

Tammy G. Williams, 63, of Sidney, passed away at 10:10 AM, Thursday, April 7, 2022 at Carle Foundation Hospital, Urbana.

Memorial service will be 7:00 PM Monday, April 11, 2022 at Freese Funeral Home, Sidney with Rev. Jason Collins officiating.  Visitation will be from 4:00 to 7:00 PM Monday at the funeral home.

Mrs. Williams was born October 20 ,1958 in Fairbury, a daughter of Ozzie and Carol Rigsby Williams.  She married Keith Kilian on December 11, 1976, they had three children.  She then married Jim Henry on October 17, 2014, he survives.

She is also survived by three children; Tricia (Ryan) Kurtenbach of Homer, Reid (Shannon) Kilian of Homer, and Wade (Mary) Kilian of Allerton, five grandchildren; Gabriel and Miranda Kurtenbach, Cameron Kilian and Alice and Adaline Kilian, two sisters; Sandy (Mark) Hotlen of Bloomington and Lyn (Jack) Edwards of Downs, several nieces and nephews, many cousins and a special friend; Tom Franks.

She was an accomplished beautician and was an instructor at Concept School of Cosmetology.  She was also a realtor with Priority One in Danville.  She was loving daughter, wife, mother, and she loved everyone dearly.  She enjoyed crocheting, playing cards, camping, shooting guns, shopping, getting her nails done and spending time with her family.

Jackie Dean Burton

 Jackie Dean Burton, 92, Urbana, formerly of Homer, went to his heavenly home at 10:04 A.M. on Saturday March 26, 2022 at OSF Heart of Mary Medical Center surrounded by family.

 Jack was born outside of Allerton to Floatus and Mary (Floyd) Burton on January 31, 1930 and was the ninth of ten children.

 Jack graduated from Homer High School in 1948. He was a star softball and basketball athlete and was inducted into the school's Athletic Hall of Fame in 2017.

 He married his high school sweetheart, Virginia Lee Lewis, on November 5, 1949. She preceded him in death on May 27, 1970. Together they had four children that survive; Jeff (Lee) Burton, Little Elm, TX, Lori (Garry) Rushing, Homer, Jerry (April) Burton, South Bend, IN, and Stan (Susan) Burton, Champaign.

 He married Mary Jane (McElyea) Peters on October 3, 1971. She survives. This union brought another daughter into the family, Crystal Jane Peters.

 Jack was a life member of the Homer American Legion Post 290, a member of S.A.L. Squadron 290, a member of the Homer Masonic Lodge, and a member of the Horseshoe Club of Danville. He also served on the Homer Town Board and Homer Fire Department.

 
Jack loved participating in and watching sports and that love was passed on to his children. He was an avid Fighting Illini and St. Louis Cardinals fan. He served as the Commissioner of the Homer Youth Baseball League and coached the Homer American Legion Post 290 baseball team for several years.

 Jack was a member of the United States Air Force from 1951-1955 and served during the Korean War. He retired from Chanute Air Force Base where he was the supervisor of the hydraulics shop for a number of years.

 Jack was preceded in death by his parents and siblings Millard Burton, Bess Sigmon, Mayo Warters, Jewel Berry, Doyle Burton, Eula Brown, Rose Kizer, Ruth Walters and Maxine Umbarger. He was also preceded in death by his daughter Crystal Peters Hudson and grandson Anthony Burton.

 He is survived by eleven grandchildren; Ginger (Brian) Laws, Jason (Tiffany) Rushing, Carly (Scott) Sallay, Lindsay Burton, Josh (Adrienne) Hudson, Jared (Kierra) Burton, Paul Burton, Madison Burton, Stephanie Burton, Veronica Burton, and Nicolette Burton. He is also survived by eleven great grandchildren, son-in-law Glenn Hudson, and many nieces and nephews.

 Funeral services will be held at 3:00 P.M. Friday April 1, 2022 at Freese Funeral Home 302 E. Grand Ave. St. Joseph. Rev.  C.W.Greer and Rev. Heju Nam will officiate. Burial will be in G.A.R. Cemetery, Homer. Visitation will be from 1:00 P.M.-- 3:00 P.M. Friday at the funeral home.

Robert B. Darley

 ALLERTON — Robert B. Darley, 98, of Allerton passed away Monday, Jan. 31, 2022, at OSF Heart of Mary Medical Center, Urbana.

Robert was born on April 14, 1923, in Allerton, to Edwin and Edith (Forccum) Darley. He married Leah Meehan on Aug. 19, 1961, in Hume.

He is survived by his loving wife of 60 years, Leah Darley; two children, Mark (Lori) Darley of Roscoe and Diane (Rick) Turner of Mahomet; three grandchildren, Morgan (Zac) Kohen J.r. Turner and Katie Turner (Hunter Foster); three great-grandchildren, Hallie, Monroe and Zayleigh; one nephew, Don (Lora) Toppe; and two great-nephews, Donnie (Brandy) Toppe and Dan (Jasmine) Toppe.

He was preceded in death by his parents and 11 siblings and their spouses.

Robert graduated from Allerton High School and then enlisted in the military, where he served as a Navy SeaBees. Once out of the military, he got a job as a bookkeeper for the Allerton Supply Company and then was a U.S. mail carrier for 34 years before his retirement.

He was a big St. Louis Cardinals fan and loved to watch them play. He also enjoyed woodworking, baking, tending to his garden and bowling.

A graveside service will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Feb. 9, at Pleasant Ridge Cemetery, south of Allerton, with Pastor Trevor Oetting officiating. 

Memorial donations may be made to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital or to Shriners Hospitals for Children.
