Joseph Lee Boise

 

Joseph Lee Boise, 93, of Champaign formerly of St. Joseph passed away at 8:26 A.M. Monday August 10, 2026 at his home.

 Visitation will be Monday August 17, 2026 from 10:00 A.M. to 11:00 A.M. at Freese Funeral Home 302 E. Grand Ave. St. Joseph. Graveside services will be at 11:15 A.M. at Patterson Cemetery, St. Joseph. Rev. Paul Dinges will officiate.

 Joseph was born March 28, 1933 in Homer. the son of George and Ruth (Bryant) Boise. He married Dorothy Schuman on May 11, 1952 in St. Joseph. She preceded him on July 19, 2013.

 He is survived by his children; Ginger (Kent) Lenz of Champaign, Gregory (Lisa) Boise of Tolono. 7 grandchildren Erica Bales, Aleene Lenz, Jana Lenz all of Champaign, Kimberlee Boise of Buffalo, MO, Julie (Jeff) Dorner of Western Springs, IL, Geoffrey (Grace) Boise of Ogden, Joseph (Tiffany) Boise of Tolono. 8 great-grandchildren; Gered (Jane) Bales, Austin (Krystal) Ray, Kelsi (LeAntwone) Davis, Alex Bretzlaff, Jordyn Lenz, Tyson Sigler, Kennedy Dorner, Avery Dorner.  8  great-great grandchildren. 3 sisters Marlene Passarello, Meredith (Alex) Chisholm, Michelle (Russ) Bryan.

 He was preceded in death by his parents and 1 brother George Lynn Boise.

 Joseph was a veteran of the U.S. Army from 1953-1955. Life member and past Commander of VFW Post 5520, Champaign. Member of the St. Joseph United Methodist Church.

 He retired from Superior Printing after 60 years of service. He also worked as a courier for Busey Bank. He also enjoyed singing karaoke.

Dr. James H. Finnell

 Dr. James H. Finnell (Doc) 94, of St. Joseph, formerly of Gilman, passed away Saturday April 18, 2026 at Amber Glen Memory Care, Urbana.

Jim was born June 15,1931 in Pontiac, IL. The son of Walter and Leota (Carlin) Finnell. He married Shirley Ann Carney in Rantoul, lL. She preceded him in death on February 15, 2026.

He is survived by his daughter Kim (Husband Terry Hill) Blair of St. Joseph. Grandchildren Megan (Jason) Wheatley of St. Joseph, Mitch Blair of Newport Beach, CA, and Maddie (Chris) Brooks of Aiken, SC. Great grandchildren Reese, Raegan and Roman Wheatley, and Carter Brooks.

He was preceded in death by his parents, son in law Mike Blair, and three sisters Bernice Sterritt, Margaret Babinton, and Helen Ferguson.

Jim was a 1949 graduate of Pontiac High School. He then attended the University of Illinois School of Veterinarian Medicine where he was awarded his Doctor of Veterinary Medicine in 1955.

Jim served in the U.S. Air Force as the base veterinarian in Libia in North Africa and later at Chanute Air Base in Rantoul, where he met the love of his life Shirley. After his service was completed, they settled in Gilman, where he joined the Piper City Vet Clinic. Doc was a veterinarian for over 50 years. He was a member of Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, Gilman, and later St. Patrick's Catholic Church, Urbana. He served as a member of the Gilman School Board for many years. He served on the Judicial Council of the American Veterinary Medical Association from 1986 to 1992. He was featured in a Life Magazine article in October 1992. Jim was known for being quite the storyteller combining wisdom and life lessons with humor. He dearly loved his family, friends, and community. 

Funeral services will be 2:00 P.M. Friday April 24, 2026 at Freese Funeral Home 302 E. Grand Ave. St. Joseph. Priest will officiate. Burial will be in Patterson Cemetery, St. Joseph. Visitation will be Friday from 12:30 P.M. to 2:00 P.M.

Charles Richard Hugh Smith

 Charles Richard Hugh Smith (known to most as Rick), age 60, of St. Joseph, IL. passed away at 8:39 A.M. Friday November 14, 2025 at Carle Foundation Hospital, Urbana, IL.

 Rick was born October 19, 1965 in Quincy, IL. The son of Glenn and Barbara (Shinall) Smith. He married  Susie (Manley) Florey, who he always said "was the love of his life", on October 17, 2015 in Homer. She survives.  

 He is also survived by his father Glenn (Brenda) Smith who loving raised him and his Step-father Bill Cawthon. He leaves behind his children Stephanie Smith, Cortney (Jake) Thacker, Glenn (Margaret) Smith, Jesse (Stephanie) Smith, Kaleb Smith. Step-Bonus daughters Delaine (Matt) Wagner, Carson (David Yan) Florey.  He was a loving "Pe Paw" to 10 grandchildren and Uncle to many nieces and nephews. Siblings Troy Smith, Amanda Sherwin, Olivia Lisenbee, Kim Huddleston, Mike Cawthon. Step-siblings Bill Cawthon, Gary Cawthon.

 Rick's mother Barbara passed one day after him. He was preceded in death by his grandparents, and a granddaughter.

 Rick started as a semi driver and then became the Fleet Safety Coordinator for C.H.I. Overhead Doors in Arthur.    He was a U.S. Army veteran.

Rick had a quick wit and ornery sense of humor.  He will be remembered for his warm heart, easy smile and the joy he found in life's simple moments like listening to music while putting together jigsaw puzzles with Susie, traveling (especially their "Quarter Flip Trips") and relaxing at home watching tv & movies with Susie and their beloved furkids.  He also enjoyed riding bicycles and unicycles, drawing & doodling, was fluent in sign language and especially enjoyed cheering on the Illinois Fighting Illini Men's Basketball teams.

 Memorials may be made to the St. Joseph-Stanton Fire Protection District or the Coles County Animal Shelter.

 Funeral services will be held at 12:30 P.M. Saturday November 22, 2025 at Freese Funeral Home 302 E. Grand Ave. St. Joseph. Brad Edwards will officiate. Burial will be in Patterson Cemetery, St. Joseph. Visitation will be Saturday from 11:00 A.M. to 12:30 P.M.

Darlene Marie Allen

Darlene Marie Allen, 82, passed away on June 13th, 2025, at 2:22 p.m. at Carle Foundation Hospital in Urbana, Illinois. She was surrounded by her loving family, brothers, sister, cousins, nieces, nephews and friends throughout the weeks prior. As she passed, her family sang her favorite songs and hymns.

Darlene was born on September 7, 1942, to Wilfred and Junetta (Martha) Kappes. She married the love of her life, Larry J. Allen, on July 9, 1965, in Rantoul, Illinois. He preceded her in death on July 29, 2000.

Darlene is survived by her son Brad (Tonya), granddaughters Karli Allen and Madeline Allen, her son David (Susan) and grandson Logan Allen, her daughter Lynn Pappalardo (Dino), grandson Nick Goryance (Jessica), granddaughter Halle Pappalardo, great-grandsons Nick Jr. and Joey Goryance and great-granddaughter Adeline. She is also survived by her brother Bob Kappes, brother David Kappes and sister Linda Schiaretti. 

She attended Holy Cross grade school and graduated from Champaign High School in 1960 where she sang in the choir and competed in numerous singing competitions. Throughout all her contests, she received Superior in every event except one, where she received an Excellent. 

Darlene was a fixture in the St. Joseph United Methodist Church choir for decades and was requested on numerous occasions to sing at wedding celebrations. Her love for music resonates throughout the family. She reached a level of singing where she was presented with the opportunity to sing opera at the professional level in New York City.

Darlene was a dental assistant in St. Joseph for 25 years, until Larry got sick. Throughout her life, she was known as a very kind and loving woman with a beautiful, one-of-a-kind smile. Her joys in life were her family and friends. Everyone who met her thought “their” Darlene was their special person. She made everyone feel as if she had a special relationship with only them. Her passion for being a grandmother superseded anything else in her life. She was each of her grandchildren’s and great-grandchildren’s biggest fan.

She was known for her outstanding chicken and noodles. 

Services and a celebration of life for Darlene Allen will be held at the St. Joseph United Methodist Church on Tuesday, June 17 at 12:00 p.m. The family will receive visitors at the church between 10:00 a.m. and 12:00 p.m.

Please feel free to wear Darlene’s favorite color, purple, or St. Louis Cardinal red to celebrate her life. Burial will be in Patterson Cemetery, St. Joseph, Illinois.

Thomas E. "Tom" Wilson

 
Thomas E. “Tom” Wilson, 81 of St Joseph passed away at 6:30 p.m. Thursday May 22, 2025.

Funeral services will be at 10:30 a.m. on Wednesday 28, 2025 at Freese Funeral Home, with

visitation from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. on Tuesday. Burial will be in Patterson Cemetery in St. Joseph.

Tom was born August 22, 1943 in Urbana, IL, the son of Virgil and Marian (Weeks) Wilson. He

married Janet Rayburn on May 4, 1968.  Tom is survived by: daughters Sheri Bialecke of Ringgold, GA

and Stephanie (Tom) Franey of Champaign, IL; 6 grandchildren – Lindsey, Keagan and McKenna Bialecke, Elizabeth Beyers, J.T.

(Emily) and Mary Beth Franey; and 2 great grandchildren – Wren and Noah Beyers. Sister Judi Wilson of Champaign.

He is preceded in death by: his parents; son-in-law Kenn Bialecke; grandson Kameron Bialecke; and

grandson-in-law Bailey Beyers.

After graduating from Champaign High School in 1961, Tom began working at Clifford-Jacobs

Forging, and joined the Illinois National Guard. During his high school years he was enthralled

with mechanical devices and engines, and he quickly directed his interests into building and

driving dragsters. He, along with many of his high school friends, built dragsters that were

competitive on a national scale in the 1960’s. His interest in the sport continued through the

1980’s when he was involved with other friends and their dragsters.

After becoming an accomplished machinist at Clifford-Jacobs, Tom joined Hansvedt in 1972. He

was recognized as one of the best machinists in the company and was an excellent teacher to

others. He was promoted to Shop Manager in 1980. While he thoroughly enjoyed his work at

Hansvedt, more importantly, he met many co-workers that became life-long friends that he

frequently associated with and traveled with outside of the work environment.

After Hansvedt was sold, Tom joined the University of Illinois in 2002 as an instrument maker,

working in the Noyes Laboratory building. He enjoyed making instruments for chemical

engineering professors and students for their experiments. He also taught classes on how to

use tool and die equipment. Although he reached retirement age in 2008, he continued working

for several years because he enjoyed teaching students. Just before retirement from the U of I,

one of his favorite special projects was to re-make new clock parts for the clock tower on the

Illini Union because replacement parts could not be found.

Tom built his home on Peters Drive in St. Joe in 1973 with the help of close friends with

experience in various trades. Once again, he became surrounded with people that would be life-

long friends. He was one of the founding members of what affectionately became known as the

Eastern Peters Drive Society, a group of neighbors that lived on Peters Drive. On most any

Friday night, the group can be found in a member’s garage solving the world’s problems and

discussing national and local sporting events.

His greatest joy in life came from the success and company of his girls and their families.

Linda Sue Hadley Marsh

 Linda Sue Marsh (Hadley),66, of St. Joseph, woke up in Heaven with Jesus at 5:15am on Tuesday (October 22, 2024). 

 Linda’s journey earth side began on January 25th, 1958 in San Antonio, Texas. She was the first daughter of Donald Hadley and Lucille (Wildermuth) Hadley. The family moved back to central Illinois when Linda was a year old and she graduated from St. Joseph-Ogden High School (SJO) class of 1976. 

 Bradley D. Marsh swept Linda Sue Hadley off of her feet and they were married on June 27, 1981 in Urbana; he survives. Together, they built their home on a farm in rural St. Joseph where they raised their 2 children, Sheryl & Andrew. 

Linda enjoyed various jobs over the years but her passion was caring for, not only her own children & Grandchildren, but any child! Every little one she had in daycare was loved as one of her own. 

Being a Mother & Grandmother was so special to Linda and she poured her heart into creating special memories with them. Her granddaughter Indira will always remember playing card games & how grandma Linda usually lost at them! Alyssa (My Boo, as she was affectionally called) will never forget Grandma being the loudest “cheerleader” in the stands! Olivia will be reminded of grandma Linda every time she eats banana bread as she enjoyed baking it together with her. Linda’s grandson Maddyx always enjoyed BINGO night, that Grandma did, with all the cousins. And Coltyn could never get enough of grandma Linda’s spaghetti dinners!

Linda’s smiling face was among the crowd at almost every sporting event, music concert, dance recital or theatre event that her children & grandchildren had. Her presence at those events will be missed very much. 

The cornerstone of Linda’s life was her faith in her savior, Jesus Christ. In 2019 when she was diagnosed with rare appendix cancer; her faith that God was in control gave her peace that passed all understanding. Her faith never wavered. Isaiah 26:3 “Thou wilt keep him in perfect peace, whose mind is stayed on thee: because he trusteth in thee.” God was the anchor for her soul that provided security in the waves of life. Linda always enjoyed the waves, the beach, the lake or any body of water! That was her happy place for relaxation. 

Proceeding her in death was her Father, Donald Hadley. Her mother, Lucille Hadley, of St Joseph, survives and is left with many wonderful memories of her daughter! They loved watching the Illini basketball games together with Linda cheering loudly, of course! (She did that for any sport she watched, especially football) Linda grew up going to the lake with her parents and her mother will never forget how Linda slalom skied. Lou and Linda both had a love of flowers and every spring they would go together to buy & plant flowers. These memories and traditions will always be close to Lou’s heart.

Also surviving is her sister, Nancy (Mark) Whitaker, of North Carolina; Linda’s husband of 43 years, Brad Marsh, of St Joseph; children Sheryl Robinson (Karl Last) of St. Joseph; Andrew (Kelsey) Marsh of St. Joseph; 5 grandchildren, Indira, Alyssa, Maddyx, Coltyn, Olivia, all of St. Joseph; as well as SO MANY other wonderful family and friends. 

“When you die, it does not mean that you lose to cancer. You beat cancer by how you live, why you live, and the manner in which you live” (Stewart Scott) Anyone that met Linda knew she lived for Jesus, her family & helping others. The polish pottery she passed down to us will be cherished as we use it. And we will try to make everything into a song just as she always did! Linda was a small woman but left a big impact on this earth. Her void will be felt everyday as we try to navigate this life without her beside us. 

The family invites you to Linda’s Celebration of Life Service on Saturday October 26th at 4pm; Faith Baptist Church (4601 North Market St, Champaign) with visitation beforehand 1pm-4pm. Private graveside service & burial will be held Sunday October 27th.

Corey Steven Thompsen

Corey Steven Thompsen, 28, of rural St. Joseph died in the line of duty Friday afternoon, October 18th, at Carle Hospital. Corey was an Illinois State Trooper assigned to Troop 7 in Pesotum.

Corey was born August 28, 1996, in Urbana, Illinois, to Steve and Susan Thompsen of St. Joseph. He grew up in St. Joseph, graduating from St. Joseph-Ogden High School in 2014. He graduated from Danville Area Community College in the Criminal Justice Program, and then attended Western Illinois University. Corey graduated from Indiana State University, where he received a Bachelor of Science degree in Criminal Justice in 2018. Corey was an avid runner and was a four year letter winner in cross country and track in high school and ran cross country for both Western Illinois University and Danville Area Community College. Corey married his best friend, Chelsea Blaase, on June 2, 2024, in the mountains of Tennessee. Their wedding was as beautiful as they are!

Following his graduation from college, Corey then graduated from the Southwestern Police Academy-session 137 and began his law enforcement career. He worked with the Vermilion County Metropolitan Enforcement Group (VMEG) , then was assigned to the State Police District 10 in Pesotum. In 2022, Corey joined the Illinois State Police Motorcycle Enforcement Bureau. In 2023 Corey was assigned to the Central Special Operations Group (SOG) Fatal 4 Team, serving the Illinois State Police in Troop 7.

Corey loved being a State Trooper and was especially proud of being a part of the motor unit. They were his second family and a tight-knit group of friends. He participated in several escort details across the state, that included the President, Vice President, memorial services, and charity bike rides. Outside of his work, Corey loved vehicles. He was so particular about every one he ever owned and took meticulous care of them. He and Chelsea recently bought his family home and were looking forward to building their life together there.

But most of all, Corey was a family man. Chelsea, his parents, brothers, grandparents, and extended family were everything to him. He loved family gatherings and was a big part of all of them. Teasing and joking around were his favorite activities with his family, but he was always there when anyone needed him. Corey is survived by his wife, Chelsea, his parents, brothers Ryan of Naperville, Illinois, and Mitchell of Champaign, Chelsea’s parents, Doug and Nanci Blaase of Ogden, and brother-in-law Drew Blaase of Danville. He also leaves his maternal grandparents, Joseph and Barbara Peters, St. Joseph, and paternal grandparents, John and Donna Thompsen, also of St. Joseph, and his extended family of aunts, uncles, and cousins. Corey loved his German shepherds, Garmin and Grimm; he spoiled them rotten!

Corey was a member of the FOP Troopers’ Lodge 41, Alpha Phi Sigma National Criminal Justice Society, and Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society. Corey was a respected member of the Illinois State Police and a friend to so many. He was deeply loved and will be sorely missed. Nothing can take away Corey’s memory which is held dear in all our hearts.

Visitation will be Saturday, October 26, from 1 to 5 pm, at St. Joseph-Ogden High School with a First Responder walk through at 5 pm. The funeral service will be held Sunday, October 27 at Faith United Methodist Church,1719 S. Prospect in Champaign. Burial will be in Patterson Cemetery, St. Joseph.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to a memorial fund set up in Corey’s name at any University of Illinois Credit Union branch. This will provide a scholarship to St. Joseph-Ogden High School students entering the field of Criminal Justice.

Maxine E. Nelson

 Maxine E. Nelson 96, of St. Joseph passed away at 10:56 A.M. Sunday April 21, 2024 at Accolade Healthcare of Paxton.

 Maxine was born May 26, 1927 in Independence, IA. The daughter of Walter A. and Genevive E. (Taylor) Ulm. She married Louis James Nelson on September 26, 1946 in Jubilee, IA. He preceded her in death on February 16, 2017.

 She is survived by her children; James D. Nelson of Brookshire, TX, Deborah (Frank) Lehoski of Houston, TX, Gregory H. Nelson of Littleton, CO, Rebecca N. (Pete) Kaudravi of Ormond Beach, FL, Susan (Marty) McLain of St. Joseph. 13 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren.

 She was preceded by her parents, 1 brother, 1 sister, 1 son-in-law, 1 grandchild and 2 great-grandchild.

 Maxine was a member of Prince of Peace Lutheran Church, St. Joseph. She was a graduate of Jesup Consolidated Schools, Jesup, IA, she also attended classes at Parkland College.

 She was a housewife and mother for many happy years.

 She worked at the National Headquarters of Alpha Tau Omega Fraternity in Champaign, retiring on December 31, 1989.

 Funeral services will be at 10:30 A.M. Saturday April 27, 2024 at Prince of Peace Lutheran Church 802 E. Douglas St. St. Joseph. Pastor Andrew Jones will officiate. Burial will be in Patterson Cemetery, St. Joseph. Visitation will be from 9:30 A.M. to 10:30 A.M. at the church.

Eva Mae Martin Murray

 
OGDEN - Eva Mae Martin Murray, 84, passed away Thursday (March 28, 2024) in Leawood, Kan., surrounded by her two children, Dawn Marie Babb (Ken) and daughters Nicole and Kaitlyn (Jesse and children) and Gregory Vernon Murray (Holly Beth) and daughters Mackenzie and Stella.

Eva was preceded in death by her father and mother, Vernon and Naomi (Loeffler) Martin of Ogden.

Also surviving are her brother, Earl V. Martin of Eureka; sister-in-law, Marlene Martin of Peoria; and Eva's husband of 39 years, Douglas Earl Murray of Mesa, Ariz.

Eva is also survived by her nephew Col. Paul Martin (USAF, Ret., Julie) of Tampa, Fla., and children and Linda Martin Sibio (Michael) of Ft Lauderdale, Fla., and children.

A visitation and celebration of life will be at 11 a.m. Saturday, April 6, at Freese Funeral Home, 302 E. Grand Ave., St. Joseph. Immediately following the celebration, Eva will be laid to rest in Patterson Cemetery alongside her beloved parents.

Eva's greatest love was her children, grandchildren, niece and nephew, all of whom received many handmade afghans, hats, scarves and other assorted products of her skill at knitting and crochet. She also possessed a clear knack at finding those little gems of mementos for birthdays and Christmases. Eva treasured family time and especially looked forward to the euchre games that would go late into the evening.

Besides being a dedicated daughter, mother and grandmother, Eva also was a professional with a successful career managing the office and finances of Unitherm Furnace and Missouri Heat Treat in Wentzville, Mo., until her retirement.

Eva then moved to Kansas City, Mo., enjoying retirement and being close to her children. While she was an avid Chiefs fan, she remained loyal to the St. Louis Cardinals, being sure to wear Cardinal red when she attended the I70 matchups between the KC Royals and Cardinals.

David E. Marsh

 

March 10, 2024 David (Dave) E. Marsh passed peacefully from this Earth with his family by his side; including his wife of 71 years. 

Dave was born in St. Joseph Illinois on August 1, 1931 to Howard W. & Orena (Skinner) Marsh. He grew up in St. Joseph and graduated from St. Joseph High School in 1950. He married the love of his life, Doris (Miller) Marsh on June 16, 1952. Two weeks later he was shipped off with the Army to serve in the Korean War. Once he returned he started farming and also became a rural letter carrier. He retired from the postal service after 23 years but he continued farming for the rest of his life. 

 Dave was active in the local community and belonged to the St. Joseph American Legion, and served on the Drainage District board as well as the Patterson Cemetery board. 

Dave was proceeded in death by his parents, his brother, Calvin Marsh and one sister, Virginia (Marsh) Vinson. 

Survivors include 1 sister, Dorthy (Marsh) Vinson, his wife of 71 years (Doris), 2 sons, Howard Marsh and Bradley (Linda) Marsh, 4 grandchildren, 9 great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews. 

Services will be private graveside with family. 

Dave will be so greatly missed and his legacy will continue on as we farm the fields each year.

Donald Ritten

 

Donald "Don" Ritten, 88, of Ogden formerly of St. Joseph passed away at 10:32 A.M. Saturday October 21, 2023 at his home.

 Funeral Mass will be held at 10:00 A.M. Friday October 27, 2023 at St. Patrick's Catholic Church, Urbana. Fr Anthony Co will officiate. Visitation will be held from 9:00 A.M. to 10:00 A.M. at the church. Private burial will be held at Patterson Cemetery.

 Don was born September 8, 1935 in Belle River Twp., MN. The son of Louis and Anna (Roers) Ritten. He married Monica Jean Lee on July 20, 1957 in Bisbee, ND. She survives.

 Also survived by his children; Karla (Larry Dolan) Ritten of Helena, MT, Karen (Kent) Knoernschild of Augusta, GA, Mark (Kathi) Ritten of Champaign, Cindy (Jim) Acklin of Ogden, Becky (Greg) Mills of St. Joseph, and Barbara (Jim) Gibbs of St. Joseph. Ten grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. One brother Bernard (Marie) Ritten of Sturgis, SD. Three sisters Eileen Engh of St. Louis, MO, Louanne Stephenson of Moorhead, MN, and Mary Lou Bagwell of Rogiers, MN.

 Don was preceded in death by his parents, brothers Gerald and Richard and one sister Beatrice.

 Don worked for Super Valu (J.M. Jones Co.) for 35 years. The last 25 as Treasurer-Controller. He served in the U.S. Army from 1958-1964.  Don had served as a board member for St. Joseph-Ogden High School, administrator of 35 IGA Profit Sharing Trust, Vice President of DSC, boss of the year for American Business Women's Association.

 Most of all Don loved spending time with his family, and he enjoyed traveling, golfing, fishing and woodworking.

Richard C. Tester

 

Richard C. Tester 73, of Foosland passed away 3:38 P.M. Saturday August 19, 2023 at his home.

 Funeral services will be held at 10:00 A.M. Thursday August 24, 2023 at Freese Funeral Home 302 E. Grand Ave. St. Joseph. Pastor Matthew Crider will officiate. Burial will be in Patterson Cemetery, St. Joseph. Visitation will be held from 9:00 A.M. to 10:00 A.M. on Thursday.

 He was born April 24, 1950 in Neva, TN. The son of Vonnie and Pearl (Hicks) Tester. He married Darlene Reisner on April 27, 1968 in Ogden They just celebrated their 55th wedding anniversary. She survives.

 He is also survived by his children; Julie Hatfield of Villa Grove and Todd (Jennifer) Tester of Mahomet. Grandsons Zach Hatfield, Jarod Hatfield and Jacob Tester. Two great grandchildren. 3 sisters and 2 brothers.

 He was preceded in death by his parents, one sister and one brother.

 Richard was a veteran of the U.S. Army serving in Vietnam . He retired from Kraft after 31 years of service.

 He greatly enjoyed fishing and spending time with his family. Richard was a good Christian man who followed the Lord.

Petrine Jane Christein Ashley

 Petrine Jane Christein Ashley, 76, was a teacher who brought her classroom everywhere she went, a storyteller, writer, and artist. Born on January 12, 1947 in Indianapolis, Indiana to Alice Skinner Christein and Marion "Cope" Christein, she became a ballet dancer, Job's Daughter, and member of Calvary Baptist Church. She attended PS81 and Arsenal Technical High School. At University of Evansville, Petrine earned a merit scholarship and met lab partner Gary Ashley. They protested the war and wrote an underground newspaper with friends that the FBI may or may not still have on file.

Her nearly 40-year career began in Booneville, Indiana. After moving to Chicago in 1969, she taught for Chicago Public Schools, and was devoted to her second-grade Spry School students. Petrine earned master's and ABD doctorate degrees from National Louis University, then served as a reading specialist and leader in the Chicago Area Writing Project. After retiring, she volunteered at Ravenswood Elementary. An active St. Pauls United Church of Christ member, she hand wrote cards for every congregant's birthday and was called The Mayor by her kids for constantly shaking hands and kissing babies. She held all the family history in the palm of her hand. Petrine's favorite students and teachers were her children and grandchildren.

Petrine Ashley is survived by Garold Ashley, her husband of 55 years, children Jessica Ashley and Seth Ashley (Sharon), and grandchildren, Ethan Ashley-Ferguson, Grace Ashley-McGraw, James Ashley, and Jacob Ashley. Always in her heart were best friends Marcia Franz and Linda Young, niece Stana McKitrick, sisters-in-law Joy Brinkmeyer and Shirley Couts, and an address book full of people she adored. Petrine is embraced in heaven by her parents, sister Elizabeth Christein Drey, dear family and friends. Services will be held on May 13, 2023 at 2 pm at St. Pauls UCC. Heidi Susanne (Norsen) Rivers

 Heidi Susanne (Norsen) Rivers, 45 of Catlin, IL passed away at 11:48 PM on Thursday May 4th, 2023.

Funeral services will be held at 2:00 PM Tuesday May 9, 2023 at Prince of Peace Lutheran Church, 802 E Douglas St in St Joseph IL.  The interment will be at Patterson Cemetery in St Joseph IL. Visitation will be on Tuesday from 1:00PM to 2:00 PM prior to the funeral at the church.

Heidi was born June 4th, 1977 in Toledo, OH, the daughter of Jack and Gretchen (Mittendorf) Norsen, and grew up in Rockford, IL.  She is survived by her mother Gretchen of St Joseph IL, brother Tim (Diane) Norsen of Colorado Springs CO, her former spouse Chris Rivers of Fairmount IL, and her two beloved children, Henry and Britta Rivers.  She was preceded in death by her father. 

Donations will be accepted to establish a fund for Henry and Britta’s future education and financial needs.

Heidi lived in Illinois for most of her life.  She went to elementary, middle, and high school in Rockford, where she met lifelong friends while attending Lutheran schools.  After graduating from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, she lived in the Chicago suburbs before moving back downstate. She lived in Homer, Fairmount, and ultimately Catlin, where she had a strong network of friends and family.  Most people are lucky to have just a few close friends in their lives; Heidi had too many to count.

Heidi had a love of art from a very young age.  She received a Bachelor of Arts in Graphic Design in 2000, and worked for the University of Illinois in different capacities since 2006.  For over eight years, she was a senior designer in the Department of Intercollegiate Athletics, and was an integral part of literature, signage, and graphic creation for the department. Most recently, she was a senior graphic designer at the Center for Innovation in Teaching & Learning. 

Heidi’s children were her life and passion. The two best days of her life were when Henry and Britta were born.  She loved being their mother and spending time with them and their friends.  She encouraged them to do a wide range of activities including playing sports, enjoying the outdoors, caring for animals, and building friendships.  She taught them to live life to the fullest, and she led by example, seeking adventures and beauty each day, and never taking small things for granted.

Heidi was a person to whom one was only a stranger once. She brought joy and laughter to everyone in her life. She will live on in heaven, and in our hearts.

  Carlene M. Roberts, 80 of St. Joseph passed away at 8:50 P.M. Sunday April 2, 2023 at her home.

 Graveside services will be held at 10:00 A.M. Friday April 7, 2023 at Patterson Cemetery, St. Joseph. rev. Jim Davis will officiate.

 Carlene was born December 12, 1942 in Taylorville. The daughter of Paul L. and B. Opal (Denny) Griffiths. She married Frank David Roberts on January 2, 1965. He preceded her in death on May 21, 2005.

 She is survived by her son Frank D. Roberts II of Littleton, Co. Daughter Paula Kaye Roberts of Jacksonville Beach, FL. Four grandchildren, four great-grandchildren. One brother Denney Griffiths of Gilbert, AZ

She was preceded in death by her parents.

 Carlene retired from the University of Illinois as a software programmer. She enjoyed gardening and antiquing.

Tristan Fuqua, 21, of St. Joseph passed away on Thursday December 29, 2022.

 Tristan was born September 23, 2001 in Urbana. The son of Ryan Fuqua and Amanda Hart.

 He is survived by his father Ryan (Jenny) Fuqua of St. Joseph. Mother Amanda Hart of St. Joseph. Sister Zella Fuqua of St. Joseph. Paternal grandparents Doug and Evelyn Fuqua of Carterville. Maternal grandparents Frank and Sandy Hart of Urbana. two Uncle's Vincent Fuqua and Cory (Brittany) Fuqua both of Marion. Two Aunt's Cheri Soliday of Mahomet, Renee Hart of Urbana. Six cousins; Dylan Fuqua, Xander Fuqua, Dixi Fuqua, Nicole Helregel,  Natalie Helregel and Dathan Ellis. 

 Tristan was full of life and enjoyed new adventures. He grew up in scouting and was able to hike Philmont with his dad and troop. He received the highest achievement of the Eagle Scout Rank. With his background in scouting, he found a love of camping. He would go any chance he could. He graduated this year from lineman school. Tristan was an animal lover, and had a dog named Hobo at home. He could have a dog friend by the end of any gathering. He enjoyed wood working, and spending time making things with his own hands. He gifted multiple family members with things he had made. He was always excited for vacations with family, and was able to explore the country.

Catherine Wells

 
Catherine Wells 89, of St. Joseph passed away at 12:35 P.M. Thursday December 22, 2022 at Carle Foundation Hospital, Urbana.

 Funeral services will be at 11:00 A.M. Wednesday December 28, 2022 at Freese Funeral Home 302 E. Grand Ave. St. Joesph. Pastor Ken Young will officiate. Burial will be in Patterson Cemetery, St. Joseph. Visitation will be held from 10:00 A.M. to 11:00 A.M. at the funeral home.

 Catherine was born June 4, 1933 in St. Joseph Township. The daughter of Elmer and Ethel (Wyant) Kammin. She married Raymond P. Wells on August 28, 1950. He preceded her on April 3, 2017.

 She is survived by her children; Tina (Bob) Gebbink of Milton, FL, Raymond (Pamela) Wells of St. Joseph, Karen Hughey of Dewey. Nine grandchildren, 18 great-grandchildren, and six great-great-grandchildren. Sister Helen Clodfelder of Mahomet.

 She was preceded in death by her parents, brother, daughter Charlotte Wells Morse, grandson Michael Morse, granddaughter Janelle Wells, grandson Raymond Wells III and great granddaughter Murelle Plotner.

 Catherine helped her husband on the farm and with the trucking business. She enjoyed bowling, dancing, and sitting by a campfire. 

 She was lovingly known as "The Warden"

Donald E. Woodward

 

Donald E. Woodward 89 of St. Joseph passed away at 10:00 A.M. Monday November 7, 2022 at his home.

 Funeral services will be held at 10:30 A.M. Friday November 11, 2022 at Freese Funeral Home 302 E. Grand Ave. St. Joseph. Pastor Jim Davis will officiate. Burial will be in Patterson Cemetery, St. Joseph. Visitation will be Thursday from 5:00 P.M. - 7:00 P.M. at the funeral home.

Don was born March 1, 1933 in Champaign. The son of Thomas T. and Dilila (Buckner) Woodward. He married Shirley Huffman on May 12, 1956 in St. Joseph. She survives.

 Also survived by his children; David E. Woodward of Chesterfield, MO, Steven R. (Gail) Woodward of Woodland Park, CO, Michael D. (Lori) Woodward of Tolono, Cheryl Ann (Derek) Booton of Mebane, NC. Six grandchildren; Sarah Paige Orwick, Josh Woodward, Justin Woodward, Nathan Woodward, Madeline Easton, Andrew Booton. One step-grandson Justin Arbogast. Three great-grandchildren. Three step great-grandchildren.

 He was preceded in death by his parents, sister and brother-in-law Arlene (Al) Dierkes.

 Donald was a member of the St. Joseph United Methodist Church. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army.

  He retired from the University of Illinois as a Housing Forman.

  Donald enjoyed traveling the country with his wife in their RV. He enjoyed his hobby of model trains and was a member of local train hobbyist group.

Delores "Dee" Irene Sprague

 

Dolores "Dee" Irene Sprague passed away on Monday, August 22, 2022. She was born on June 21, 1929, the daughter of Virgil Julian and Arvilla L(Menges) Neuman.

She married James E. Sprague in Covington, Indiana. He preceded her in death.
She is also preceded in death by her sons, Rodger D. Sprague, Steven R. Sprague, Phillip L. Sprague, brothers Joseph A. Neuman, Robert E. Neuman, George D. Neuman, Jerry W. Neuman,
a sister, Virgene Neuman Miller, who was her best friend, and a granddaughter Stacy Sprague.
She is survived by her brother Richard D. Neuman of Danville and her grandchildren, Andy Sprague (Champaign), Marybeth Sprague (Scottsdale, AZ), Chad (Paula) Sprague, Matthew Sprague, Jeremiah (Laura) Sprague, Katie (Trent) Seaman all of Williamsport, Indiana, Jamie Sprague and Christina Sprague of Jacksonville, Florida. 17 great grandchildren, 2 great-great Grandchildren and daughters-in-laws, Cheryl Sprague, Jane Sprague and India "Angel" Sprague.
Dee loved spending time with her family and her amazing group of friends who met weekly to drink coffee and enjoy each other's company. She was without a doubt a very spiritual minded person and was also an ordained reverend who married some of her nieces, nephews, great-nieces, and friends. She was often referred to by most her nieces and nephews as the "favorite" Aunt. one of the kindest ladies to walk this earth and never met a stranger that she wouldn't hold a conversation with. She loved to travel with her sister and her friends all over the world. Dee was an on-the-go person. She enjoyed her yard and took pride in her flowers and trees she had planted. Dee enjoyed watching her hummingbirds feed by her windows and she was fond of Angels and collected a lot of them. Dee will be greatly missed by her family and friends.

Kathryn June Travis

 Kathryn June Travis, 72, of St. Joseph passed away Monday evening, April 18, 2022 at her home.

A private graveside service was held at Patterson Cemetery in St. Joseph on Tuesday, April 19, 2022.

An informal visitation will be held at Faith Baptist Church at 4601 North Market St., Champaign, IL on Saturday, April 23, 2022 from 11-1:00. A short memorial tribute will be officiated by Pastors Bob Hassel & Brandon Tipsword at 1:00 pm with a meal following.  

Kathy was born July 8, 1949 in Turrell, AR to Ray and Juanita (Burnett) Smithson.  She married Jud Paul Travis on August 30, 1969 in Wood River, IL. He survives.

She is also survived by her son, Paul (Teri) Travis of rural Flatville, IL and her daughter, Lori (Kevin) Taylor of Ogden, IL as well as five grandchildren: Kolten Taylor, Maclayne Taylor, Kenly Taylor, Coy Taylor, and Korinne Travis. Also surviving are her mother, Juanita Smithson, her sister Pat (Tony) Ham of Midland, TX and brother Danny Ray Smithson of Festus, MO.

She was preceded in death by her brother, Bradley Wayne Smithson, her daughter, Amy Kathryn Travis and her father, Ray Moreland Smithson.

Kathy was a member of Faith Missionary Baptist Church, St. Joseph.

She retired after 22 years from Herff Jones Cap & Gown as an administrative assistant. 

In lieu of flowers memorial contributions can be made to Faith Missionary Baptist Church or St. Jude’s Children’s Research Hospital.
