Mike was born on June 16, 1947, son of Dale and Nondus (Clutter) Wakefield of Homer. He graduated from Homer schools, and it was there where he met Barbara Webb; they were wed Sept. 30, 1967. He and Barb raised two sons, Craig and Keith, and were blessed with four grandchildren, Victoria, Cole, Mila and Ezra. They were very proud of their children and grandchildren.

Mike served with pride in the U.S. Navy. He served in Vietnam from July 18, 1968, to April 4, 1970. He came home and continued his service as an active member of American Legion Post 290 in Homer. He served in many capacities over the years, including post commander.

He was an integral part of the American Legion Memorial Day service each year and also served for many years on the GAR Cemetery Board. GAR Cemetery in Homer was the only cemetery owned and operated by an American Legion post at that time.

After his return from service, he joined his father, Dale, as a partner and owner in Wakefield Auto Supply in Homer. He also, after some time, opened a branch store in Cissna Park, Cissna Park Auto Supply. Later, he worked for the state of Illinois Department of Transportation.

Mike was preceded in death by his wife, Barb; father, Dale; and sister-in-law, Darlene Wakefield, all of Homer; and brother-in-law, Frank Dutton of Mahomet.

He is survived by his mother, Nondus Wakefield of Homer; two sons, Craig (Sarah Summers) of Homer and Keith (Amanda Tilly) of Trinity, Fla.; one brother, David of Homer; and two sisters, Connie (Steve) Loyet of Venice, Fla., and Debra (Donald) Happ of Homer.

Services will be on Thursday, Jan. 2, at New Life Church of Faith, 505 S. Crittenden St., Homer. Pastor C.W. Greer will officiate. A social time at noon will be followed by a celebration of life at 1 p.m., during which friends may share stories if they wish. A military service will then take place at the graveside at GAR Cemetery, Homer.

The family requests that in lieu of flowers, donations be made to the Homer Fire Department, 202 N. Main St., Homer, IL 61849.
