Ruth N. Mowery

Ruth N. Mowry, 90, of St. Joseph passed away at 12:30 A.M. Friday October 23, 2020 at CU Nursing and Rehab, Savoy.

 Graveside services will be held at 10:00 A.M. Wednesday October 28, 2020 at Grandview Memorial Gardens, Champaign.
 Freese Funeral Home 302 E. Grand Ave.  St. Joseph is in charge of arrangements.

 Ruth was born January 30, 1930 at Farmer City. The daughter of Warren B. and Sylvia (Reynolds) Holman. She married Daniel Mowry on January 20, 1952. He preceded her on August 18, 2019.

 She is survived by her children; David (Cheryl) Mowry of Fisher, Daryl (Sharon) Mowry of St. Joseph and Dana (Kent) Lutz of Homer. Six grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.

 She was preceded in death by her parents, three brothers and a daughter-in-law Linda Mowry.

 Ruth worked as a crossing guard for 40 years in St. Joseph. She was an avid reader, enjoyed traveling and going to Mexico. ruth enjoyed Square Dancing for over 30 years with her husband.

Louise Wann

 

ST. JOSEPH — Louise Wann, 94, of St. Joseph passed away at 2:14 p.m. Tuesday (Oct. 27, 2020) at Carle Foundation Hospital, Urbana. No services have been set at this time. Freese Funeral Home, 302 E. Grand Ave., St. Joseph, is in charge of arrangements.

Louise was born Dec. 8, 1925, in Stanton Township, the daughter of Roy and Dena (Ackermann) Carmien. She married Henry L. Wann in 1948. He preceded her in death in 2016.

She is survived by her children, Connie Cardinale of Urbana, Bonnie Willis of Peoria and Brian Wann of St. Joseph; three grandchildren; five great- grandchildren; and one sister, Janet Heath of Ogden.

She was preceded in death by her parents; daughter, Karen; one grandson; four brothers; and two sisters.

Louise enjoyed life and family and friends, especially her grandchildren.

Harold Morris

 Harold Morris, age 75, of St. Joseph passed away at 3:53 A.M. Tuesday October 20, 2020 at his home.



 Graveside services will be held at 2:30 P.M. Saturday October 24, 2020 at Patterson Cemetery, St. Joseph. Rev. Art Blevins will officiate.

Freese Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements. 


 Harold was born December 12, 1944. He married Patsy Burton on July 6, 1966 in Champaign. She survives.


 He is also survived by his children; Angela (Jon) Maurer of Colorado and Bobby (Deanna) Morris of Ogden. Also five grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.


 Harold was a retired truck driver with 30 years of service. He loved spending time with his children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He enjoyed large family dinners. He liked drag racing, fishing, grandchildren's sports and road trips. He liked to  travel anywhere. His favorite hobby was model railroading, he loved trains. He was a model railroader for over 50 years. Showing trains to friends and family was a great pleasure to him. Harold never met a stranger and liked to vist with everyone. He will be greatly missed but not forgotten.

Carolyn J. Stokes

 ST. JOSEPH — Carolyn J. Stokes, age 83, of St. Joseph passed away at 12:10p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 20, 2020, at the Southgate Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Metropolis.

Carolyn was born May 24, 1937, in Pulaski, daughter of the late Benjamin and Daisy McDaniel Dulaney.

She was a member of the Mt. Pleasant Baptist Church in Pulaski; and worked at PDQ Printing Company in Urbana.

She enjoyed her loving family including her grandchildren; cooking; gardening; and growing roses. She loved to take walks in her neighborhood and work outdoors. Carolyn enjoyed attending auctions with her late husband, Butch, of 52 years.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Henry Harrison “Butch” Stokes on June 25, 2009; brothers, Norman and Albert Dulaney; sisters, Ruth Smith and Frances Cockrell; two infant sisters; and one infant brother.

Survivors include two daughters, Georgia (Mervin) Benting of St. Joseph and Donna (Harold) Little of Grand Chain; son, Donald Stokes (Bill Doggett) of Naples, Fla.; brother, Joe Dulaney of Urbana; three sisters, Helen Huitt of Ripley, Miss., Wanda Dulaney of Ripley, Miss., and Ann Matlock of Mississippi; four grandchildren, Katie Barton, Emily Gregg, Ben Little, and Eric Little; great-grandchildren, Aubrey Barton, Chase Gregg, Zoey Little, Megan Gold, Serenidy Little, Ja’Braylen Little, and Jordan Little; and several nieces and nephews.

Friends may call Saturday between 9:30 and 11a.m. at the Freese Funeral Home, 302 E. Grand Ave., St. Joseph, where funeral services will follow at 11a.m. with Pastor Tom Anders officiating. Interment will follow in the Patterson Cemetery in St. Joseph.

Pallbearers will be Mervin Benting, Harold Little, Donald Stokes, Ben Little, Matt Barton and Kyle Gregg.

Michael Anthony Castellon

 SAVOY — Michael Anthony Castellon, 77, of Savoy, formerly of Sidney, passed away peacefully Friday, Oct. 16, 2020, at his home surrounded by his loving family.

Mike was born Sept. 22, 1943, in Athens, Ga., a son of Francisco and Dorothy ( Gregory) Lopez- Castellon. He married Carol Ann (Rapp) Edgington on Sept. 22, 1988, in Sidney; she survives in Savoy.

Mike is survived by his son, Michael Patrick (Lauren) Castellon of Austin, Texas; two stepsons, August (Allison Higgins) Edgington of Savoy and Mark (Silvia Ortiz) Edgington of Champaign; and nine grandchildren, Joselinne (Nelson), Jeanette, Midalyn, Milton, Jordy, Alexia, Adonay, Nelson and Diego, all of Champaign.

Also surviving are his brother, David (Karen) Castellon of Athens, Ga.; his sister, Linda Harris of Marietta, Ga.; and two nephews, Gregg (LeAnn) Harris of Woodstock, Ga., and Scotty (Lauren) Harris of New Orleans.

Mike graduated from Athens High School in 1961 and attended the University of Georgia. He played in a rock ‘n’ roll band called the Heartbeats and played bass guitar for a recording studio in Nashville, Tenn.

He moved to Champaign in 1975 and retired from Caradco/JeldWen in Rantoul in 2001. He moved to Sidney in 1988, where he was a member and elder of the Sidney United Church. He and Carol retired to a condo in Savoy in 2013.

Mike was an avid reader particularly of history, followed the stock market closely, enjoyed gardening, loved old cars, rooted for the University of Georgia Bulldogs and enjoyed annual trips to Florida in January, particularly in recent years, when friends joined them.

He had an amazing knowledge of trivia, facts, science, history, grammar and spelling, and didn’t care if he was politically incorrect. He enjoyed trips with the Corvette Club of Illinois after Carol bought a Corvette.

He had a special bond with his stepsons and considered them his best friends. He became an instant grandfather to his stepdaughter-in-law’s family and loved the hugs and kisses from Silvia. He will be greatly missed by all of his family and friends who will remember him as kind, appreciative and humorous.

There will be a virtual memorial service available online in a week; a link will be sent to family and friends. He will be buried near his mother and grandparents in Athens, Ga. Memorials may be sent to St Jude Children’s Hospital in Memphis, Tenn., a charity he loved and supported, or to the Mark Edgington Family to be used toward immigration costs for the Hispanic family that called Mike “Grandpa.”

Martin Gary Wilson

 SIDNEY — Martin Gary Wilson, 61, of Sidney passed away on Wednesday (Oct. 7, 2020) at home. He was surrounded by his loving wife, Cindy, and his entire family.

Marty was born Dec. 31, 1958, to Gerald and Judith (Harden) Wilson. They preceded him in death.

He was a 1977 graduate of Homer High School, he worked for The News- Gazette during and after high school, earning him the CB handle “Paper Boy.”

He then went on to work other jobs but ended up back at The News-Gazette, working as a pressman for 26 years, retiring in 2018. Recently, he drove a school bus for the Heritage School district.

He is survived by his wife, Cindy (Harms) Wilson of Sidney; two sons, Joshua (Kathy) Wilson of Tuscola and Dane (Cassie) Wilson of Casey; three stepchildren, Jessie Tillman of Sidney, Jenny (Gabe) Kirstein of Joliet and Travis Evosovich of Sidney.

He has 11 grandchildren of whom he was so proud.

Marty has two brothers, Jim (Tracy) Wilson of Tolono and Joe (Cathy) Wilson of Seneca; and one sister, Jeri (Ed) Thomas of Tolono. He also had many nieces and nephews who loved him.

He was a lifelong St. Louis Cardinals fan, he enjoyed going to auctions, and trying his luck at casinos. He loved watching and laughing at his grandkids, riding around Sidney in his golf cart, watching “Andy Griffith” and “Gunsmoke,” and sitting on his back porch with his best pal, “Roxy Girl.”

Marty has requested no services.

There will be a Celebration of his Life on Saturday, Nov. 7, 2020, at the Salt Fork Center at Homer Lake, family from 10 a.m. to noon, friends from 12:30 to 2:30 p.m.

Due to COVID-19, we ask that you please wear a mask when entering the Salt Fork Center if you can attend.

Carl. L. Wienke

 CHAMPAIGN — Carl L. Wienke, 90, of Champaign died at 5:15p.m. Thursday, Oct. 8, 2020, at Carle Foundation Hospital, Urbana.

Visitation will be from 3 to 5 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 18, 2020, at Morgan Memorial Home, 1304 Regency Drive West, Savoy. Masks will be required. Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Monday, Oct. 19, 2020, at Trinity Lutheran Church, 701 E. Florida Ave., U. Masks will be required, and attendance is limited to 50 (including family). Burial will immediately follow (no attendance limitations) in Grandview Memorial Gardens, Champaign.

Carl was born Nov. 25, 1929, in Homer, a son of Louis and Leon Poll Wienke. He married Irma “Janie” Wells on June 13, 1953, in Champaign. She died on June 10, 2017.

Survivors include one son, Keith (Tricia) Wienke of White Heath; two daughters, Lori (Mark) Leger of Rantoul and Amy (James) Nazzoli of Wildwood, Mo.; four grandchildren, Nicholas and Ellie Nazzoli, both of Wildwood, Mo., and Carly and Cody Wienke, both of White Heath; and two sisters, Elaine Ebeling of Urbana and Dorothy Buhr of Tolono.

He was preceded in death by his brother, Ronald, and his sister, Betty.

Carl served in the United States Air Force. He was a lifelong farmer and also worked as a bookkeeper for Farm Bureau Farm Management.

He was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church, Urbana; the Champaign County Farm Bureau; the East Central Farm Business Association, serving on its board for 36 years and as president for 30 years; Trinity Lutheran Choir from 1960 to 2019; and the University of Illinois Oratorio Society for 15 years.

Memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society, Alzheimer’s Association, Trinity Lutheran Church, or an organization of the donor’s choice.

Phyllis Menzer


Phyllis Menzer 83, of South Elgin, IL formerly of St. Joseph passed away at 2:20 A.M. Friday October 9, 2020 at White Oaks at Spring Street in South Elgin.

Funeral services will be held at 11:00 A.M. Friday October 16, 2020 at the St. Joseph United Methodist Church. Pastor Gene Turner will officiate. Visitation will be held on Thursday from 5:00 P.M. - 7:00 P.M. at Freese Funeral Home 302 E. Grand Ave. St. Joseph.

Phyllis was born April 25, 1937 in Haworth, NJ. the daughter of C. Peter and Helen (Roper) Schaefer. She married Richard G. Menzer on April 26, 1958 in Bergenfield, N.J.. He preceded her in death on August 22, 2019.

She is survived by her children;  Carin (Brad) Rodemoyer of Western Springs, IL, Eric (Leanna) Menzer of Sycamore, IL and Ginny (Mike) Tabb of Dwight, IL. Grandchildren Breelyn Corzine, Carsten Menzer, Caroline Menzer, Brian Rodemoyer, Taylor Brooks, Kyle Osterbur and Lane Osterbur. One great-grandchild Makayla Osterbur. One brother George (Joan) Schaefer of Triangle, NY.

She was preceded in death by her Parents, a  brother Peter Schaefer, and sister-in-law Barbara Schaefer.

Phyllis was a member of the St. Joseph United Methodist Church the church choir and United Methodist Women.

She went to Dumont High School in New Jersey. Phyllis worked in New York city until the birth of her first child.
Phyllis also worked for several years at the State Bank of St. Joseph.

Clarine L. Saathoff

 MAHOMET — Clarine L. Saathoff, 91, of Mahomet, formerly of Gibson City, passed away at 6:05 a.m. Wednesday (Oct. 7, 2020) at Carle Foundation Hospital, Urbana.

Private family burial will be held at St. John’s Lutheran Cemetery, Anchor. Rosenbaum Funeral Home, Gibson City, is assisting the family with their arrangements.

Clarine was born July 12, 1929, in Ogden Township, a daughter of George and Katherine Behrns Frerichs. She married Harm J. “Bob” Saathoff on Feb. 20, 1949, in Royal. He passed away Jan. 22, 2003.

She is survived by three daughters, Rhonda (Bill) Harlow of Sarasota, Fla., Nancy (Trey) Pautsch of Portland, Ore., and Robin (Don) Brokate of Mahomet; two grandchildren, Kimberly (Jose) Soto of Lawrenceville, Ga., and Travis (Kimberly) Brokate of Colorado Springs, Colo., whom she was extremely proud of; and two precious great-grandchildren, Lexi and Viera Soto.

She will be missed by all who knew and loved her.

Max W. Lewis

 NEWMAN — Max W. Lewis, 75, of Newman died Saturday (Oct. 3, 2020) at home.

Max was born on May 17, 1945, in Tuscola, to Willard and Martha (White) Lewis. He married Norma (Beard) Lewis on Feb. 6, 1966, in Tuscola.

He is survived by his wife, Norma Lewis; two children, Shannon (Chris) Gordon of Newman and Steve (Jennifer) Lewis of St. Joseph; and six grandchildren, Jacob Gordon, Emma Gordon, Caleb Gordon, Hannah Lewis, Jacey Lewis and Hayden Lewis.

He was preceded in death by his parents and one brother, Kent Lewis.

Max grew up in a farming family and graduated from Newman High School in 1963. After graduation, he attended Eastern Illinois University, where he played basketball. He then attended Southern Illinois University in Carbondale and graduated in 1968. He worked for the USDA as a district conservationist before returning to farm in 1975, and he continued to farm until he could no longer in 2015.

When Max was not out in the fields, he loved to travel with his family and friends. His favorite type of traveling was on a cruise ship. He also loved to spend his winters down in Sarasota, Fla. Max was on the Newman School Board and was the secretary treasurer of the Sargent Township Drainage District.

A funeral service will be at 11a.m. Oct. 8 at Newman Methodist Church with Mr. Ted Shearer officiating. Burial will follow in Newman Cemetery. A visitation will be held on Oct. 7 from 5 to 7 p.m. at Joines Funeral Home, 401 W. Gillogly St., Newman.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Newman Methodist Church.

Jean L. Nonman

 SIDNEY— Jean L. Nonman, 83, of Sidney passed away at 9:05 p.m. Friday, Oct. 2, 2020, at home.

Private family services will be held at a later date. Freese Funeral Home, Sidney is assisting with arrangements.

Mr. Nonman was born Dec. 13, 1936, in Danville, a son of Walter “Chet” and Alice Schaeffer Nonman. He married Beverly Carleton on June 19, 1954, in Longview; she survives.

Also surviving are two children, Jerri (Chris) Boley of Urbana and James (Lori) Nonman of Sidney; three grandchildren, Nikki (Jeff) Boswell of Washington, Ill., Cari (Ken) Midkiff of St. Joseph and Rodney (Karla) Nonman of Tolono; four great-grandchildren, Clay Frederick, Mia Frederick, Nolan Nonman and Makayla Nonman; and a sister, Brenda Luedke of Broadlands.

He farmed in the Broadlands area and was road commissioner for Raymond Township for 16 years. He was a unique character who touched many lives. He will be remembered for his giving personality and generosity. “Don’t be mean, be like Jean.”

Joyce Ann Duckwitz

ST. JOSEPH — Joyce Ann Duckwitz, 84, of St. Joseph passed away at 11:45 p.m. Wednesday (Sept. 30, 2020) at Country Health Care & Rehab, Gifford.

Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 3, at Freese Funeral Home, 302 E. Grand Ave., St. Joseph. David Barcus will officiate. Visitation will be from 9 to 11 a.m. Saturday at the funeral home.

Joyce was born Aug.5, 1936, in Barnhart, Mo., the daughter of Eugene and Minnie (Higgs) Smith. She married William Duckwitz on July 1, 1955, in St. Joseph. He survives.

She is also survived by her children, Maleah (Wes) Grussing of Royal and Todd (Darla) Duckwitz of St. Joseph; four grandchildren, Holly Broeker and Scott Haith of Round Lake, Nichole Duckwitz of St.Joseph, Amber Jensen of Mattoon and Justin (Amanda) Duckwitz of Broken Arrow, Okla.; 14 great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; and a sister, June Chambless of St. Joseph.

She was preceded in death by her parents; sister, Shirley Leevey; and one great-granddaughter.

She was a member of St. Joseph Church of Christ. Joyce attended St.Joseph-Ogden schools.

She was a homemaker, wife and mother.
